After much umming and aarhing, the four friends had decided that a day at University was required. Not to open their minds through higher education; but to share the celebration of a special birthday.

MDW was 20 years old and they had deemed it appropriate to invite their many loyal readers, and a few star guests, to a birthday bash.

Chalky, Dufus, Enigma and Shirt had received their admission badges merely days before the anniversary spectacular, so much frantic 'what video covers shall I take?' antics ensued for the next few days (with the exception of Enigma who, bless her, only has one big book and a T-Shirt for the cornucopia of stars to sign).

Travelling to the Angel, the four friends alighted and tramped onwards to City University, not really knowing where they were going, but trusting in the rather iffy directions of Shirt.

The venue was arrived at, and the four friends ascended the steps to 'heaven', Shirt sweating at the prospect of once again meeting Nicola Bryant; Enigma positively swooning at the thought of meeting Mark Strickson.

The friends queued and, eventually, were led around the houses, up the stairs and through the doors of a large lecture hall.

And so the day began.

Gary Gillatt was the host with the most.

Ed Stradling was the AV Guy with the blond hair (apparently).

Gary Russell was the one they took the piss out of.

Gareth Roberts was the quiz master.

Dave Owens was Terry Wogan.

Clayton Hickman had the scores on the doors.

Oh, and there were some famous people there too!

Mark Strickson, Nicola Bryant, Colin Baker and Sophie Aldred; plus Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffatt, Andrew Pixley, Jeremy Bentham, Paul Cornell, Nicholas Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery.

But what of the day.

It began with what was to be the core of the day - audio visual delights.

The first AV extravanganza was a compilation of clips to Fat Boy Slim's opus: Praise You. Highly polished and a lot of fun, it unfortunately paled into comparison, for Chalky, when they aired Geri Halliwell's masterpiece Look at Me, alongside a carefully chosen, and incredibly apt, selection of clips. You had to be there to fully appreciate it.

Of course, the other highlight was the uncanny marrying of the K9 and Company title sequence with the theme music of classic cartoon, Scooby Doo. Amazingly, they fit perfectly together - it was strangely disturbing. Following this was a wonderful variant on Wacky Races, with - again - well chosen Who clips in substitution for the original sequence.

Other highlights of the day were:

A quiz with many a 'professional' fan, which basically was an excuse to mercilessly rip Gary Russell's old MDW video reviews to pieces.

A fascinating panel on the birth of MDW followed.

The four friends spent intervening minutes spending too much money.

The afternoon was given over to the stars. Highlights included the uncanny resemblance of two separate stories about Michael Winner from Nicola and Sophie. Colin bemoaning the state of television today. Hair-raising antics with Sophie, a bird costume and a dodgy stage-hand. Revelations about the clothing preferences of Colin and Nicola during the recording of Whispers of Terror.

In the autograph queues, Enigma's scarf and hat attracted much attention. Nicola liked the hat; Sophie liked the scarf - apparently they are in fashion this winter. Chalky and Enigma were interviewed for Mythmakers, but it is likely that Enigma will be edited from the video, considering her fascinating response to the question 'How important do you think MDW is to the continued success of Doctor Who?' (or some such gabble) was; 'I don't know, what do you think?'.

Enigma was also interviewed by Paul Cornell for FXS, but unfortunately, it has transpired that she will never appear on the pages of that esteemed publication. Maybe she's not as photogenic as she thought.

In a day free of Dufus-style moments; Shirt-style anecdotes; Chalky-style wittiness or Enigma-style swooning, the four friends had a very enjoyable time.

Not very funny this time, was it. Ah well - the funniest bit was the Geri Halliwell number, and you had to be there for that.

Chalky, Dufus, Enigma and Shirt will ride again in…Get A Sense of Dejá Vu.
