Chandra's Story....

Both Chandra and Kevin have balanced translocations,
so the odds are stacked against them........read on.......

Kevin and I were told, after 3 miscarriages, that both of us had a
balanced translocation.  I have a balanced translocation with my 3 & 5
chromosome.  Kevin has a balanced translocation of his 6 & 10 chromosome.
How we got together?  By the grace of God!  They told us that we would
have a better chance of playing the lottery.  Before Lanae and after the
miscarriages, they told us that we were able to have a child - it just
depended on how many miscarriages we would be willing to go through.
They never made it clear that we could possibly have a disabled child.
So we were naive and decided that we would go through as many as were
needed.  We got pregnant with Lanae and had a very normal pregnancy.  I
did not have any tests done - I planned and did have her at home.  It was
great (painful though!).  There were no doctors to whisk her off to test
her and that was nice also.  We did find out about a week later that she
had the 5p- syndrome.  It was a shock needless to say.  Our decision to
have children might have been altered if things were made clear to us and
I am very glad things worked out the way they did.

We did have another child - 11 month old Jacob - who is perfectly normal.
I felt that birth control was not the way to go with me and I decided to
go off the pill and see what happens.  A month later I was pregnant.  At
20 weeks we got a level 2 ultrasound and everything looked good.  I had
him on November 11, 1998.  Perfectly normal - a perfect miracle.  We
really stepped out on faith with this one and it turned out.  Although he
is normal we decided that the risk was not worth taking again and made
the decision to not have anymore children.  My husband and I are at such
high risk!  He had a vasectomy done this past year and now we have peace
about the child thing.  Plus, our hands are full with a 13 year old, 3
year old and now an 11 month old.

I wouldn't change anything that happened with our child bearing
decisions.  We love them all and are proud of them.  I am glad that I
finally don't have that worry at the end of  each month - 'WHAT IF I'M
PREGNANT KEVIN??????!!
