Thames Valley Wing ATC Training

Thames Valley Wing Air Training Corps provides the opportunity for teenagers to take part in a diverse range of exciting and challenging activities. Some are organised at national and regional level, but most take place locally at Wing and Squadron levels.

If your interest is in Flying, Sports, Adventure Training, Camping, Athletics, Shooting, Drill, Watersports, Abseiling, Gliding, the Duke of Edinburgh's award scheme or overseas Travel....plus many other activities, then the Air Cadets has all of these to offer.

You will also receive training that will enable you to gain an NVQ such as a BTEC in aviation studies. This may be particularly useful if you are considering a career in the armed forces or civil aviation.

Many of the competitive elements could see you competing at a national level or inter-services competition. The Air Cadets develops personal qualities and a sense of community and citizenship valued by employers, both military and civil.

All of the training provided within the Corps is organised at a local level, but based upon subjects defined by HQ Air Cadets, RAF Cranwell. Basic Training is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you will need before attending RAF Stations and joining in with the activities at your local Squadron.

Subjects that you will cover may include:

History of the ATC - History of the RAF - The Rifle - First Aid - Basic Drill - Initial Expedition Training

Each of these sections has a corresponding multiple choice test paper or practical test. All of these subjects will be taken at your own pace, and generally no additional home or project work will be required. Each of these subjects must be passed in order to move onto the Leading, Senior and Staff cadet training.

Other subjects covered at the more Senior classifications may include:

Aeronautics - Propulsion - Space Travel - Air Navigation - Meteorology - Aircraft Recognition

Specialist training will provided for adventurous activities, expeditions, fieldcraft exercises, leadership tasks and may other interesting topics.
