This was our last evening in NYC for my grade 9 music trip. We were supposed to see Grease but it left in February so we had to choose something else. My parents didn’t' think I'l like Rent but all of my friends were going to see it so I decided to too. I was there with a group of seven people without a teacher. I loved being able to fit a person to the voices I'd been hearing for months before. I thought it was really strange seeing Anthony with that same voice coming out of his mouth. I remember not really liking Mimi very much and my mom was surprised. I then figured out that I saw Marcy and my parents saw Daphne, who left I don't think much before I was there.

Again, I wasn’t' going to see the show but at the last minute decided I didn’t care that none of my friends were going…I love the show and that's that! I didn’t' go to the stage door cuz I didn't really know about it. Amy went and asked if I wanted to join her but I didn't. This was the first and only time I saw Robert on stage before he left for Broadway and my only time seeing Krysten on stage.

February 11, 1998 Today 9 cast members were at my school for CANFAR week.......talked about personal experiences with AIDS and sang Seasons of Love (which they didn’t do again…they weren't supposed to do it for us and only found out after) and then talked some more. I remember running into Krysten in the hall while she walked to the auditorium with a cup of coffee. She did the female solo for SOL…it was a fun lunch time.

This trip took a lot of planning but didn't work out very well. Jenny and I had decided that we need to see the show together in rush seats and this was the day we chose. Jennn, Lindsay and Erin were coming with us and Lara and Lisa were meeting us there. Jennn and I had a jazz concert at lunch so we decided that, if we werent' finished by a certain time the others would leave and we'd follow a little later. If not, they would meet us in the back hall. We finished late and they weren't there so Jennn and I left but when we got there the others weren't there. They arrived a while later because they were waiting for us on the first floor and we assumed they meant the second floor cuz that's where the concert was. When we got there we also found out that there were no rush tickets left cuz 1) it was passover and 2) David was to be on as Collins. Jennn had to go to an appointment and Lindsay thought that she should leave if she wasn't seeing the show but Jenny and Erin stayed with me to wait for Lara, who we couldn’t' get in touch with. When she finally did arrive we decided to buy $35 balcony tickets but we then coudlnt' get in touch with Lindsay and Jennn to tell them (Lisa ended up getting a rush ticket) We went to Lara's dad's office for a couple hours to do homework and then we was the show. At the stage door I didn't talk to anyone but Jenny and Lara did. I felt kind of uncomfortable. Lara then drove some of us (I'm not sure who) home.

This was my first time acutally sitting in rush seats. First of all, it was a Saturday so, when Steph and I got there there were only 5 tickets left…we were holding 4. I underestimated the temperature and almost froze but I was ok in the end. There was a group of people in line from Buffalo and one of them was very friendly…he and one other girl were pretty much the only people we talked with. In the middle of the afternoon a bunch of people started singing the Folgers' song in different styles…country and operetic were 2 of them. Renée came around 1 I guess and Steph started writing in Renée's newly restarted journal about how strange we were feeling. Val arrived at 4:30 and she and Renée left then to get food from Renée's dad's store. We ended up with the 3 seats at the very right and one in the first row on the edge of the centre block but Steph switched to be next to me. I remember not being able to see very much during the show. During Seasons of Love, Tamara was basically standing right ontop of me and she looked down with a smile I'll never forget. Then, at the stage door Steph told me that if I didn't talk to Tamara that she'd make a fool out of me…so I told her to. She just said "Hi Tamara, this is Lindsay and she wanted to meet you," and Tamara shook my hand and said she saw me during SOL. That was when I found out that she'd be on as Maureen during the first week of June while Jen was away but she didn't know specific dates yet.

This was acutally the day that the group of us who tried to go on the 15th were going to go again but not enough people could hold tickets. Steph decided at the last minute that she really watned to go if someone would go with her. My parents said I could but I'd still have to go to violin. Steph went down at lunch and was the first person there by about 30 seconds. She made friends with the guy who came right after her. I guess I got there around 6:30/7:00 after getting really confused about which stop to get off at…I chose the right one. Steph was very right to want to go that day…Dean was on for Luther (great for her…I would have liked to have seen Luther again from close but that's ok) Talking to Tamara at the stage door didn’t' happen for very long cuz there was a school group there and I think she knew one of the teachers. I talked to Jen for the first time tonight. Steph slept over afterwards and then it was off to school again.

I'm not sure of the exact date but it was between these two when I was told that Tamara's father is David (my mother's sister's husband)'s brother's wife's brother. Lara and I decided to investigate together the next time we both saw her.

Luther's last. We had only bough these tickets a couple weeks before the show for an entire row of seats! There were 11 of us and it was great. Everyone met at my house before the show except Jenny, who was over working on a project, and Kate and Val met us at the station. Jenny and I weren't quite ready when people started arriving, but we managed. Lara was there with a few friends sitting a few rows ahead of us and Tor was sitting a couple rows behind. I don't really remember much about the show. It was my first time seeing Melanie on stage and I took an immediate liking to her. I couldtn' believe such a big voice coudl come out of such a little person! At intermission Annie went off with a friend. I saw Esther in the washroom...she was sitting at the back of the 1st balcony and was enjoying it. One part of the show i remember very well is Chad and Luther's table jump at the end of WYO and the amazing applause it received. I think this was the frist time I saw Luther cry. At the end of teh show someone on the other side of the audience held up a banner saying We (heart) U Luther. When he saw it he wiped his eye, pointed to the sign and put his hand to his heart. The stage door was crazy. Jen was being really strange before Luther came out. She kept peeking her head in and saying 'Oh, he's coming...oh, maybe...wait...soon...' She managed to get her ring stuck in a girl's hair and apparently dropped her gum in someone else's. Lara was closest to Luther so she collected programs and he signed them all...I almost didn't end up getting my back but in the end i found it. I didn't end up talking to him at all. Lara and I then found Tamara to tell her our story. We got all confused because one of out links was wrong but it worked! She knew all the people we were talking about! We just sort of hung around for a while longer. Jenny really wanted a Luther hug before we left so I waited with her. She really didnt' need ot ask for one...he was in a very giving mood. He also noticed her necklace and asked what it was...made her really happy. When we were finally ready to go Annie was no where in site. We had to wait arond to find her and then we could leave. There were 9 peopel sleeping in my basement that night and we were a little squished, but it was ok. I was up at 8:00am and found that my dad had bought cinnamon buns and bagels and all sorts of stuff. People started to emerge one by one on this Victoria day...I think everyone was up by noon. We ate and the people started leaving. Overall it was a little nuts!

Part of the reason I went today was because it was the beginning of Jen's week off which meant that there was a better chance that Tamara woudl be on as Maureen. We hadnt' decided if we were goign to see the mat. or evening but there was a better chance she's be Maureen for the mat. so that's what we decided to see. Adrienne had decided that she wanted to see the show again and this was the day...but when i called her that morning she told em she had been called into work during the day. The sweethear that she is said she's drive me and Steph anyway. Tor was one of the first people i saw when getting out of the care. It was kind of strange cuz he was at Luther's last too. What we didnt' know what that there were tornado warning for the day. Early/mid morning it poured. There wasn't room under the overhang so Steph and I went under the steps where we ended up quite soked. After a while we managed to fight our way under the overhang. There were still big gusts of rain that swept into us with the wind. I was studying for my math exam, well, trying to study for my math exam all morning. This was the day when I met Elizabeth...she was sitting right in front of me. Once we had bought our tickets we were contimplating what to do if Tamara was on as Maureen for the evening and not the mat. Now, neither of us had the money with us to see both shows so Steph decided she'd rush on Thursday and I'd meet her there after my gym class. Tamara didn't end up being Maureen at all that day, which made me feel better. During LVB i kept thinking that Christine and Tamara shodul just switch places everytime i saw them doing somethign together. The rest of the show was just kind of a blur. The next day I saw Raina at school and she told me that Adrienne was really worried about us and wanted to make sure we were alright.

June 3- This is only kind of Rent-related...at school i had tried out for a thing abotu Jonathon Larson and i didnt' make it but this was the day of the show. It was pretty good. The guy who played Jonathen was the only one who did both acting and singing. He kind of messed up Glory but did really well otherwise. They sang SOL, Glory, Rent and WYO. I liked that, at the end they didnt' right out say that he died, but it was implied. By this time I was soo happy cuz i was seeing Tamara's Maureen the next day and coudln't wait.

The big day! I was really excited...i was counting down the hours from when i got to school. I remember Lindsay thinking i was nuts in music class. Kinda had to deal with me in French too...but i didnt' care. Steph had called me at 8:00 to tell me that everythign was alright. She got there at 7:00 and there was still no one else there. The next people didn't come til 8:30. All during gym I was talking and I was soo excited. Renée had brought sandwiches to school for everyone at lunch and there were a few extras so i took one for dinner. I decided to take the street car to the subway with Leslie and Amanda, which took a really long time and then it took a while for the subway to come....i was kind of late but not relaly. When i got there it was 7:40 and Elizabeth was still waiting for someone else to get there...i think it was Lisa. It was a crazy understudy night...Tamara as Maureen, Dean as Mark, Dom as Mimi, Lemonie as Joanne...it was great. Tamara and Melanie were amazing together...the ebst and strongest TMOLM i've ever heard. Dean was hilarious. I just remember having an enormous smile on my face for the entire show...i was bouncing off the celing i was so happy. I didnt' wnat theto end. It did and i acutally talked to tamara afterwards. I got a pic with her and told her how i wanted to see her as Maureen on Sunday but hhad to see it so came back. Steph slept over and ended up going home int eh morning and then went to school.

June 5- The saddest of days. I left keyboarding early...last day of shcool...and went to Jenny's to watch Dazed and Confused with Anthony Rapp. Nearing the end of the movie I got a phone call. It's Lara. She says she has good news. Tamara's going to b'way in 2 weeks. What kind of good news is that?! I coudltn' figure out whether i shodul be happy for her or sad for me. I was so upset I had to leave Jenny's early. My mom picked me and Erin up and I went home and listened to Tamara TMOLM on the computer over and over and i wrote Tamara on email about how she's such an amazing person and how much she's influenced me and how I coudln'd decided what to feel about it and i decided everyone else can be happy for her, i was being sad. Afterwards I found out that she had been called and given very little time to choose what to do. She chose to leave cuz Sarah and her father woudl be in Israel, leaving her by herself. She decided and Sarah told Lenore on the Wednesday but couldnt' tell anyone til the Friday. It was then determined that her last show was going to be the 28th....and I was going!

This was goign to be my day to make up to Steph and stay in line for her btu she decided she had soemthing else to do. Insted I held a ticket for Jenny while she wrote her last exam. I had written my last exam the day before...this was kind of my Happy Summer gift to myslef. This was probably one of my strangest days in line. When I got there Elizabeth, Matt and Shimmy were there but Shimmy wasnt' seeing the show...he was there at 4:30 and wastn' seeing the show!!! He and Matt coudltn' sleep! Evette, Deanna and Lisa (not cow) were there too and a group of three girls got there quite early too. All of us tried singing all of Rent, giving out parts as we went on...I was Roger with Jenny...but ny then end Evette was everyone so we jsut stopped. That afternoon, Jai came by and was kind of upset cuz the Bay was doing a bunch of ads with Rent cast members and he was to be the only lead without a spot. So, Jenny, Erin, Elizabeth, Deanna and I got together a couple of programs, a badly photocopied picture, paper and markers and made Jai his own Bay ad. We decided to give it to him righ before the show. More happened before that though. Ashley got there around this time. This day was in middle fo teh World Cup and a game had just taken place. A guy who got really really drunk watching the game decided to pay us a visit. He had a Denmark flag and was yelling out Denamrk over and over. One of the girls in teh group of three pretended she was from Mexico and kept yelling back at him. Not long after he got there he started to scare us and he looked like he was going to throw up. He started singing Spice Girls songs to us and he almost fell over on a bottle cap. He started getting angry at people when they didn't talk to him. Finally, someone managed to get away to Chad the doorman who scared the guy away. So, before the show we went to give Jai he Bay ad. He was one fo the last people to arrive and Tamara came jsut before he did. I remember she came around the corner of the building with a water bottle and a sweater in her arms and gave me a big smile and went inside...and then I started to cry. I hadn't seen her since I found out that she was leaving and I guess it just reminded me that I wasn't going to see her so many more times. I got a bug hug from Jenny and I was basically fine until her last show. Then Jai came and we gave him our work of art (?!?) and he was almost in tears. He gave each of us a hug and told us that they're now thinking of having him in the real ad. He also told up that he had to go in and rehearse cuz Gavin was going to be on as Collins and he was really nervous so needed Jai there to go over some things. You couldnt' tell Gavin was the least bit nervous...he was REALLY great. This was Jenny's first time seeing the show since Luther left and she didn't really want to like Cary...good thing for her he was having one of hims many off nights due to sickness. She only once heard the real Cary voice in person. After the show we saw Dean for the first time since his daughter was born but he was in quite a rush to get home so we didn't get to talk with him much.

I remember today being really hot. There was a beach volley ball court set up across the street and there were people playing all day and there were compatitions going on and they were giving out free samples of drinks, of while Elizabeth had about 15! Around 9 in the morning my dad passed by the line on his way to pick up a computer. He asked if I wanted something to eat so I said if he found something he thought I'd like he could bring it back. He brought me a rasin scone and peach iced tea...I think the scone was kind of stale though. I don't remember much of the rest of the day! It was the day that Adrienne found time to come...she worked during the day and didn't know if she'd make it for 6 but just barely did. We went to the concourse for dinner and Adrienne got to know Steph and Elizabeth. They decided to go see the udnerstudy board before the show so I stayed and talked to Adrienne. Elizabeth come back happy (Tamara was to be on) and Steph pissed...the only understudy was for Dean, who was finally able to take off a show to be with wife and baby...which meant that Sas was finally back! During the show every once in a while Adrienne would take my hand or rub my arm to make sure I was alright...she understood about everything with Tamara leaving...it was perfect. I don't really remember how it happened, but I ended up with the stash from the show. After the show I got my first hug from Tamara and I gave her a pair of green sunglasses as a goodbye gift. I shook hands with her everytime I saw her before...this time i got a hug without saying a word. I told her I'd be there the next day and I was then force dto face into the parking lot for a couple of minutes with Adrienne close on guard to make sure I didnt' peak. Elizabeth was talking to Tamara about my birthday. What was decided was that Tamara, who woudl not be in her own place at the time, would collect call Elizabeth who would 3-way call me...but i didn't find out until a few days later when the plan wasn't needed any more. Going home there was a subway delay that forced us to take a round about rout home. Adrienne walked me to my house and then walked her five minutes home.

June 17--Lauren's birthday...I wish I could have stayed to see the show! I had piano and a dance show though so I couldn’t. I slept at Lara's with someone else and we cabbed to the threatre at about 5. I met Lauren for the first time since I had been emailing her. I also really met Lisa for the first time. Lauren decided she needed a crown so put Lara's yello pants on her head for a while. Then, banners were put up all over while Lara and Lauren went to the concourse. They came back and lots of pictures were taken…and Lauren got a real crown! Apparently lots of crazy stuff went on after I left and during the show but I wasn't there to see it.

Front row of the balcony for free with Jenny! My mom got the tickets from work so we were sitting with a bunch of kids from the program where she works but I didn't mind at all. Elizabeth ended up getting in somehow as well. It was another really bad Cary's voice day…a monotone Mimi at the end…I think he was off for the evening. It's amazing how much more you can see from father away. Watching everyone dancing in SOL was quite amazing…especially the left side fo the like, which I never can see. After the show, Tamara was really confused about my being there. Everyone had told her that they snuck in or something like that and she asked me how I got in so I reminded her…it didtn' take her long to remember though. I then turned so that Jenny could take a picutre just as Tamara was about to hug me…it's a strange picture!

I honestly don’t know why I went to this show today. A bunch of people planned to have what they were calling a Tamara-o-thone…saw the show on the 23 (while I was sleeping through STOMP again); slept over and were seeing again. Elizabeth didn't see the show on the 23 but slept over and held me a ticket. She called me in the morning to tell me everything was fine and that she had good an bad news. Bad new first--both Jen and Tamara wenen't going to be there for the show that night; good news--Tamara was staying til July 7 cuz there was trouble getting Maggie's green card or something. To top it all off I was sick. I got there around 9 I guess and I was coughing all day and all through the show. It's not a day that stuck in my mind.

June 25-I didn't see the show today but it was just as special. My brother was going to overnight camp (no, that's not why it was special) and I couldn’t decide it I wanted to go with to send him off--I was up anyway so I went. We had said goodbye to him already but were going around to find him on his bus. I looked up ahead of us and saw a very familiar tattoo…then turned to my mom and told her that Tamara was in front of us. She didn't hear me, or thought she heard me wrong, so I said it again. I knew Tamara was with her younger sister, Sarah, and 2 adults, who I knew weren't her parents. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know if she'd know who I was so much out of context but both I and my mom knew that I'd be upset if I didn't say anything. My mom said she'd say somehting to her and then noticed who Tamara was with--her aunt that links the long distance connection between us. Her aunt, Rachel, knows my mom's sister who looks like my mom so she introduced herself as Barb's sister--and then Tamara saw me. She definitely knew who I was. I got a very big hug. Rachel asked how Tamara knew me. "Oh, she's at Rent a lot" was her answer! We talked for a bit; I found out that Tamra was saying her last goodbyes to her cousins. I told her I missed her at the show the night before. My mom asked how she was liking the idea of Broadway and if she was glad to be staying for an extra 10 days. She said everything is just overwhelming and still feels like a dream but that yes, she liked the extra time she was granted at home. We said goodbye and went to find my brother. When leaving, we came very close to running them over.

I met Elizabeth the day before, after the matinee and she asked Karen H. if she knew if Tamara was going to be on the next day…she told us yes so we were both quite relieved. I slept at Elizabeth's and we went down together by street car. I believe we were first there for the evening. Alex came not much after and Lisa soon after that. Lara wanted to see the show but there was some problem so she and Sorelle and Hailey said they were going to tour the city and didn't. They saw the matinee which apparently wasn't the greatest…Cary and Jen and Tamara were all sick (another monotone Mimi). After the matinee, romours started flying that Tamara was going on as Maureen for the evening…and they were true! She was chewing on a stick so we asked her why. She said it's licorice root and it makes your throat feel better cuz she was feeling sick. We then asked her what it tastes like…stick!!! When she found out she was going on as Maureen she decided it'd be nice for her friends to see her Maureen once more. There were more tickets but we thought they shouldn't be stuck at the side so we said that I was holding them or something like that. There were a couple of people who didn't like the idea very much but, well, it was too bad for them. Tamara went to call them and get money and then came to join the line. She managed to get them second row centre. There was much anticipaion before the show. I was front row centre and Tamara and Maureen and Dean took over for the ailing Cary and Dom was on. Tamara's finacee ended up sitting directl behind me which was kind of strange. OTM was the best I have seen--she hit her mic once accidentally and made the funniest face on 'that cow's been jumpy' and she took a slight jump back--I'll never forget it! THEN…intermission was almost over and an anouncement was made. "Ladies and gentlement, for the second act, the role of Mimi Marquez will be played by Melanie Durrant." You know what…I dotn' think you could hear the end of the sentence--the first row an most of the second just screamed--Melanie's one and only Mimi! Saskia wasn't there, Karen was on for Tamara and I think Christine was on a day off so she couldn’t take over for Karen to take over for Dom (yes, another sicky!) There was so much random screaming for her just in general. After the show, when Melanie came out confetti was thrown at her and everyone applauded. Jai told us that they were told at Christmas Bells that Dom was leaving and that Melanie was going on and they were all so excited. In talking with Tamara I said something about being brother-less…she was clueless until I told her that it was my brother I was sending off to camp…then she understood. I think this was the best show I saw.

July 1-There were a bunch of misunderstandings before this and it ended up with me and my dad meeting Elizabeth at Queen's Park. We found out what time the cast was performing and that it was at Queen's Park, not Nathan Philip's square. We walked there anyway and stayed for a little while…watched a huge cake being cut and listened to good ol' Mel talk…hes' REALLY short! Then we walked back to Queen's Park and I found that Lara had gone with a bunch of other people. I noticed that Jeremy was there…he left the cast a while before though. When they came on I saw that Tamara wasn't there cuz she was still sick and that Maggie was there even though she wanst' really in the cast yet. Chad wasn't there cuz he was singing Oh Canada for immigrants so Dean did Mark. WYO was the funniest thing…he really did clench his jaw til he frowned!!! Jen was wearing a shirt that said 'I think I might be a lesbian' and Dom's hair was up all crazy…you could tell she wouldn't be on stage for the show that night! Anyway, they sang SOL, Rent, TMOLM, and WYO and let me say, everythign was entirely on crack.
