What, Exactly IS a Vampyre, Anyway?

In The Beginning...

Let's start with the meaning of the word vampyre. The prefix vam comes from the same root as the word "vanish", or more popularly, the same root as the spanish word "vamos", which means "go or leave"(which was made popular by John Waynes mispronunciation: Vamoose). The original root literally means out of.

The secound half of the word is derrived from the same root that we take funeral pyre from. It originally meant grave or death.

When put together, these words mean something very different from the popular legend known as the vampire. They now begin to shed some light on the reality known as the VAMPYRE.

Moving On...

So, literally, a vampyre was someone out of the grave. This originated in a time of medical ignorance, when premature burials were commonplace due to the incorrect diagnosis of death. After being buried comatose, but alive, the unfortunate individual awoke to be heard screaming from a shallow grave, where they normally either suffocated, or starved to death. The unfortunate ones which managed to claw their way out, met a more grisly fate.

Often emaciated, bloodied from their escape, and crazed from their experience, the "dead",walking through the streets of their towns, after being buried several days before, were seen by the ignorant and uneducated townspeople as the "devils work". Often they were met by cruel means of torture and execution, at the hands of their loved ones, that they had fought so hard to escape to rejoin.

Vampyres Today

Gone are the legends. Gone are the superstitions. Gone are the visions of blood-crazed eyes in the darkness....These are things of the past. but, there are real vampyres.....

Today, what we know as vampyres, are actually a subculture of the gothic lifestyle. Their taste for the macabre, the spiritual, and their individual mindsets have drawn them into a life that few understand...or even care to. This alienation causes the modern day vampyre to be retreat to the recesses of what becomes the world of a vampyre....an alternate world of self-creation, self-affliction, and alternate comprehension veiled from the world, by the mysts of secrecy, in which only the vampyre, and a trusted few, are ever allowed to experience its innermost sanctum.....
