MERMAID

This delightful creature was a commission that I made for a friend. When she asked me for a mermaid I think she was expecting something like the Disney version, however once she saw the finished mermaid she was highly delighted with her.

She is made from very fine white clay, which was necessary for taking the subtle colours.

This shows the above mermaid in the initial stages of construction. Several people have asked me if I used a mould. I suppose I should be flattered but I wasn't, in fact I got quite miffed. I only use moulds if I make them myself. Shortly after this photograph was taken she was unceremoniously sliced in half and hollowed out - a bit like gutting a fish really, then rejoined together with slip. This is the stage at which you either carry on or sling the whole lot back in the clay bin. I did however persevere I'm glad to say and she still remains one of my favourite pieces.
