Why would a true Christian need a therapist?

Going it alone vs living in God's family:

Back in l973 I became a Christian. I was so on fire for God that I believed that I could do all things through Christ. God was everything and enough. Who would need more? Since that time I have seen and experienced many things that have taught me that God desires to work through us in our relationships with each other. I think back to a time when I sat and cried with a friend who had just lost her baby to SIDS. I didn't know God then nor was I aware of how he was using me to comfort my friend.

So why use a therapist?

Friends and good listeners are so very vital to our mental health and God wants us healthy just as all parents want their children to be healthy. But there are times when we wear out our friends, we weary them and exhaust them with our unresolved burdens. It is at those times that it is best to refer to a trained therapist who has the experience and skills to lead that person to resolution and freedom in Christ. In addition, it is not a burden to a Christian therapist to work with these folks. It is a joy to see God working in them and it is absolutely wonderful to see God in action as he drops ideas into the minds and hearts of both therapist and client to show them the way out of their predictament.

Do you know why we have HMOs?

We have them because the stigma of accessing therapy is fading and normal but unhappy people are seeking help for their problems. It is there and its available and God is calling droves of Christian counselors out to set his children free. In addition, many "mental problems" are now being rediagnosed as biological problems activated by strss and loss. Depression is an example. Friends are usually not as informed about these medical aspects so the old idea of "When in doubt, check it out" might not be a bad idea if your gut advises it. I've seen several happy campers leave my office after one visit knowing that all was well and they could relax and return if it was ever needed.
