·Religion: God is a loving creator (people, family, earth and animals. Understand that God loves everyone and we share and take care of others.
·Language Arts:
·Writing: First, children learn letter formation block style, journal writing, dictation then moving on to inventive spelling and then guided writing.
·Math: Patterning, sorting, classifying, number recognition and identification, money, time, beginning addition and subtraction, mental math, number order, number writing, graphing, estimation, etc. (Saxon Math Program)
·Music: rhythm, movement, song, dance (formal music class 2 days per week in addition to classroom music instruction)
·Computers: Keyboard skills, identify various parts of the computer, letter recognition, eye/hand coordination (mouse control), various learning games integrated within the curriculum.
·Science: classify and identify life cycles of living and non-living species, basic solar system, gravity, (color mixing) and water movement.
·Social Studies: community, safety, American Patriotic symbols, famous Americans, map skills
·Art: basic use of art utensils, creative expression, small motor skills, such as brush control, use of different art media, exploration
·Physical Education: Gross motor development skills, relays, organized games, sportsmanship and learning to follow rules and regulations.
HIGHLIGHTS
Sharing, Fieldtrips including: Zoo, Theaters, Pumpkin Patch, Christmas Tree Farms, local Museum and other local trips. Buddy Reading with sixth Grade, Christmas Program, Reenactment of the Stations of the Cross, Weekly Mass and Rosary, Science Fair, Ice Cream Social, Merced County Writing Festival, Thanksgiving Feast, Mother’s Day Tea, Talent Show, Grandparent’s Day and other classroom celebrations. Honor individual child on their birthday and also as “Star of the Week” and “Student of the Month”.
*Reading: high frequency words, parts of a story, environmental print, directionality, parts of a book, poetry, children’s literature, role play, shared reading (big books and nursery rhymes). Guided reading strategies and leveled reading.
*Grammar: Sentence structure, punctuation, (capitalization, periods, commas question marks, quotation marks)
*Phonics: Phonemic awareness, letter/sound recognition, chanking (parts of words) beginning and ending sounds and medial sounds)
*spelling: beginning with inventive spelling, then leading to spelling of high frequency words, names of peers, and simple sentences.
