History of Our Lady of Miracles School

Our Lady of Miracles originally opened its doors in 1953 with Msgr. John B. Forde as pastor. When first opened, the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) from Monroe, Michigan, came out to staff the school. From 1966 through 1968, the school was staffed by IHM Sisters from Los Angeles. The school closed in 1968 and remained closed until 1979. At that time, a small group of parents, with the support of the pastor Fr. John Harguindeguy, began a preschool, kindergarten and first grade with an enrollment of 30 students. In 1980, grades 2 through 6 were added with an enrollment of 97 students. It was the original connection between the IHM Sisters from Michigan and the community of Gustine that led the IHM Community to accept the invitation to return and assist in the reopening of the school.

Since the reopening of Our Lady of Miracles School, the growth has been one of steady progress not only in terms of enrollment but also with regard to religious formation and academic preparation.

Recently considerable work has been accomplished on the campus with the addition of a new playground, new thermal windows throughout, a new staff lounge, new lunch tables, and many other smaller changes. An instrumental music program, Computer and Science labs, and a new reading series are part of the continual process of improvements in the instructional program.

Current enrollment stands at 177. Classes remain small with much individual attention for the students. A wide array of student activities provide an environment that is exciting and motivating. Activities include vocal and instrumental music, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball, Academic Decathlon, Student Council and many more exciting traditions mark the seasons of the school year and provide leadership opportunities. Students celebrate Mass together each Wednesday, daily prayers mark the beginning and end of each day and the Rosary is recited weekly. Students continue to carry the legacy of their years at OLM as they continue to grow and develop using Today’s Faith for Tomorrow’s Future. The OLM graduates do very well in high school. The evidence can be seen at the many activities that students participate in at the high school level. Our graduating classes are very small in comparison to the public schools, however, the names of our graduates can be seen in the newspaper articles in a very positive manner. Whether it is in sports, academic areas or leadership positions, you can be assured that the OLM students are usually at the top of the list.

We at Our Lady of Miracles School provide quality education where morals and values are part of the everyday teaching. The students learn that “Choices have Consequences” and that they are responsible for their education as much as their parents and teachers.
