Lighthouses hold a special place, not only in our maritime history but also in our hearts.   There is a mistique surrounding these beautiful structures that appeals to our most fundamental emotions.   Stories of tragic shipwrecks and the heroism of lighthouse keepers captivate the imagination.   The wonderful architecture and beautiful surroundings of lighthouses have inspired centuries of artists, writers, and photographers.   And of course, there is that most pratical and all-important function of lighthouses - to save lives.   To the lonely mariner at sea, there is nothing more reassuring than to see the beacon of a lighthouse in the distance. Although modern technology has attempted to bypass the importance of the lighthouse, they will always be a significant part of our heritage, and continue to serve mariners around the world.
