Adela Yarbro Collin's
The Apocalypse

Offered by JM

A Short Annotated Bibliography of The Apocalypse, by Adela Yarbro Collins, The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN, 1979.

This commentary, is the 22nd and final volume of New Testament Message, A Biblical-Theological Commentary, edited by Wilfrid Harrington, O.P. and Donald Senior, CP. As stated by the editors, this commentary series is intended to provide not only up-to-date scholarship, but also the specific message of each New Testament author in understandable terms.

Ms. Collins states that her "volume is intended to show that there is a distinctive and powerful logic which relates the various parts of the Apocalypse (Revelation) to each other." It "is written in the conviction that the key to understanding a work is in its literary form.", and that anyone "who tries to read it as a letter will be severely frustrated." Ms. Collins proclaims that the work is "an ‘apocalypse', a revelatory narrative."

Ms. Collins is an Associate Professor of New Testament at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. She is also an Associate Editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly.

The New Testament Message is a commentary series designed to bring the best of biblical scholarship to a wide audience. The essay-format (rather than a word-by-word commentary) helps the reader savor the beauty of the biblical message and, at the same time, understand the sensitive task of responsible biblical interpretation. All twenty-two of the contributors are Roman Catholic, but their work is addressed to the Christian community as a whole.
