Commentary Review:

G.B. Caird's
The Revelation of Saint John

Offered by RWL

Caird, G.B. The Revelation of Saint John. Hendrickson Publishing: Peabody, MA. 1999 (Second Edition).

Caird claims that in order to understand the book of Revelation, one must first understand what John was saying to his audience, then, and only then, can one understand what the Spirit is saying to Christians today. Caird claims that the most difficult task in interpreting this book is to know when to take things literally and when to take them figuratively. He offers his translation of the Greek text, but does not comment on every word of it. He highlights certain aspects of the passages and draws heavily upon Hellenistic and Jewish apocalyptic themes in order to give credence to his understanding of the book of Revelation.
