Step III: Immediate Context

(FS) A. IMMEDIATE CONTEXT

This Gospel gives much space to Jesus' post-resurrection appearances.
Pre: The pericope comes after material relating the passion and death of Jesus (18:1-19:37) and comes right after the hasty burial of Jesus in a borrowed tomb (19: 38-42).

Post: After this pericope comes the appearance to the cowering apostles (20:19-23) and to Thomas (24-28). 20: 30-31 offers a "thesis statement" for the whole book, but perhaps also for the resurrection narratives ("that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah").
