Initial Acquaintance/Rough Translation

(FS) - STEP I - Amos 8: 1-12

A. Comparison of Translations

(A=NRSV, B=NIV, C=Nueva Biblia Española/New Spanish Bible)

v. 1:
A. The LORD God...a basket of summer fruit
B. The Sovereign LORD...a basket of ripe fruit
C. el Señor...un cesto de higos maduros (the LORD...a basket of ripe figs)

v. 2:
A. The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass them by.
B. The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.
C. Maduro está mi pueblo Israel, y no no pasaré de largo (Ripe is my people Israel, and I will no longer pass them by)

v. 3
A. The dead bodies shall be many, cast up in every place. Be silent!
B. Many, many bodies-flung everywhere! Silence!
C. Cuántos cadáveres arrojados por todas partes. Chsss! (How many bodies flung all over the place. Shhhh!)

v. 4:
A. Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land
B. Hear this, you who trample on the needy and do away with the poor of the land
C. Escuchadlo los que exprimís a los pobres y eliminaís a los miserables (Hear it you who [lit.] squeeze dry the poor and do away with the miserable ones)

v. 5:
A. that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances
B. that we may offer wheat?-- Skipping the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales
C. Para encoger la medida y aumentar el precio (To/with the purpose of shrink[ing] the measure and raising the price)

v. 7:
A. Surely I will never forget any of their deeds
B. I will never forget anything they have done
C. ...no olividar jamás lo que han hecho! ([I will never] forget what they have done!)

v.8:
A. And all of it rise up like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?
B. the whole land will rise up like the Nile; it will be stirred up and then sink like the river of Egypt.
C. Se alzará todo como el Nilo, como el Nilo se agitarán y se calmarán. (It will rise up like the Nile, like the Nile [the lands] will be stirred up and then will calm down.

v. 10:
A. I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation...I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head;
B. I will turn your religious feasts into mourning and all your singing into weeping
C. Convertiré vuestras fiestas en duelo, vuestros cantos en elegías...vestiré de sayal toda cintura y dejará calva toda cabeza (I will turn your religious feasts into mourning, your songs into ________...I will clothe all loins with sackcloth and leave bald every head.

v. 11:
A. The time is surely coming, says the LORD God, when I will send a famine on the land...not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD
B. The days are coming, declares the Sovereign LORD, when I will send a famine through the land...not a famine of food, or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD
C. Mirad que vengan días--oráculo del Señor--en que enviará habmre al país...no hambre de pan ni sed de agua, sino de oír la palabra del Señor. (Look, days are coming--oracle of the Lord--in which I will send famine upon the land...not hunger for bread or thirst for water, but of hearing the word of the Lord.

v. 12:
A. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it
B. Men will stagger from sea to sea and wonder from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it
C. Irán errantes de levante a poniente, vagando de norte a sur, buscando la palabra del Señor, y lo no encontrarán. (They will wander aimlessly from [sunrise to sunset?], drifting from north to south, searching for the Word of the Lord, but they shall not find it.)
