Luke 10:25-37
Step III: Immediate Context
(FS) - STEP III.
IMMEDIATE CONTEXT
In 10: 1-23, Jesus sends out the 72 "missionary heralds". In the pericope for today, Jesus responds to the questions of an "expert in the Law" (NIV) with this parable of the Good Samaritan.
In 10: 38-42, he is at the home of Mary and Martha- Mary sits at his feet, while Martha gets peeved at her. (Looking ahead to next week: was Mary sitting and listening to Jesus' teaching a turning upside down of conventional ideas about the place of women? A Samaritan choosing to "love" a Jew, a woman being lauded for abandoning her "place" doing housework to listen to Jesus like a male disciple-- is that a common thread?
Starting in 11, Jesus starts giving lessons on prayer.
The author is "Luke"; according to Kuemmel's "Introduction to the NT" his goal is to stir in "Theophilus" trust in Christian teaching about Jesus through an "orderly", "complete", and "accurate" account.
