John 12:12-16

Initial Acquaintance/Rough Translation

A. Comparing Translations

(JFC) The Contemporary English Version, 1996 and the English Standard Version, 2001 and the Revised Standard Version, 1953 differ some, as these notes indicate:

13b "Hooray! God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord! God bless the King of Israel!"- CEV
"Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" - ESV and the RSV

B. Textural Criticism

(JFC) 13 For the imperfect, evkrau, gazon( from, kraugavzw, several witnesses read an aorist, others a different word from krazw, meaning much more what is expected as we recall the story and still others retain the text as printed in Nestle-Aland. The variant seems more familiar and to fit the flow of the narrative, so far, at least. Then others add at the end of the introduction to the quote, after evkrau, gazon, the present, active, participle of legontej, as might be expected, but seems unnecessary in this context, so, unlikely original, especially since just as many reliable witnesses retain the text as received. 16 For e;gnwsan, "to know", according to Brown's AB, "the Codecis Bezae and Koridethi have the almost synonymous verb noein ('understand') which may be original." Possibly so.

C. Rough Translation

(JFC) 12 The next day a crowd great of those having come to/for the feast/festival, having heard that this Jesus had come to Jerusalem. 13 They got/took the palm branches of the Phoenix and came/went out to the meeting of/with Him and they shouted/cried, "Hosanna; blessed/praised (is) the One coming in the name of the Lord, and the King of the ("country") Israel." 14 But found this Jesus a (young) donkey (and) sat upon it, according it is written: 15 "Not fear, daughter of Zion behold the King of yours is coming, sitting on a colt of a donkey." 16 This not did know/understand it of His the disciples at first, but when was glorified/honored/praised then they remembered that this was about/of Him it was written and it had been done/happened/accomplished to Him.
