Lectionary Year B
December 22, 2002
Fourth Sunday in Advent
Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26
Step III: Immediate Context
(FS) B. COMPOSITIONAL WHOLE
Mowinckel (The Psalms and Israel's Worship, Vol. 1, p. 47) identifies 89
as a ROYAL PSALM. That it, the king of Judea or Israel is in the
foreground. He also identifies it as a LAMENT. He conjectures that
perhaps a king in the latter days of Judea may have prayed this psalm as a
prayer of penance, or after a lost battle (p. 70).
