Initial Acquaintance/Rough Translation

A. Comparing Translations

(JFC) The English Standard Version (2001), the New International Version (1978, revised 1983) and the Revised Standard Version (1946) differ somewhat:

9c that we might not be a burden to any of you, - ESV
so that our expenses would not be a burden to anyone there - NIV
that we might not burden any of you, - RSV

10b how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers. - ESV
that we were pure and honest and faultless toward all of you believers. - NIV
how holy and righteous and blameless was our behavior to you believers. - RSV

11b like a father with his children, - ESV
we treated each of you as a father treats his own children. - NIV
like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and encouraged you and charged you - RSV

12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. - ESV
We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you into his Kingdom to share his glory. - NIV
to lead a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. - RSV

B. Textural Criticism

(JFC) 12 For the present, active, participle, kalou/ntoj, a couple of major variants read an aorist, active, participle, kalesantoj, while many more, according to Metzger (TCGNT) who calls the Textus Receptus' present tense "appropriate in the context . . ."

C. Rough Translation

(JFC) 9 For you remember, brothers, the work/labor of ours and the work/hardship; night and day we were being worked [aorist, middle or passive, participle] so as not to burden anyone of you we preached/proclaimed/made known the Gospel/good news of the God. 10 You witnesses and the God, how in a manner pleasing to God justly and blamelessly to you the ones having been brought to believe [aorist, passive, participle], 11 for/just as you are knowing [perfect, active, indicative], how one/someone each of you like a father a child of his 12 we are urging/encouraging [present, active, participle] you and we are comforted/consoled [present, middle or passive, participle] and we are urged [present, middle or passive, participle] into the walk/manner of behavior you [accusative, plural] in a manner pleasing of the God of the One calling you into that One of His Kingdom and glory. 13 And through this and we give thanks to the God constantly, that you received (the) word of hearing from us of the God you received/accepted the word of/from men but as it is truly (the) word of God, which (is) also at work in you the ones believing.
