Composition
(FS) A. IMMEDIATE CONTEXT
Pre - The pericope is like a climax of the Abraham stories (Genesis
12-25:11).  The flow:
Genesis 12:1:  Abraham answers God's call, and leaves all, based on God's
promise to make a great nation from him (though Sarai, his wife, is barren-
Gen. 11:30).   God promises Abraham a son, and land (Gen. 15).  At Sarai's
behest, Abraham sires a son through her maidservant Hagar (16).  God
promises to bless Ishmael, the firstborn, but the covenant will be carried
through the yet-to-be born Isaac (17:21).  Isaac is born (21: 1-7), the
one through whom God brings Sarah and Abraham laughter and joy.  Sarah has
Abraham send Hagar and Ishmael away.  In 21:22-34,  Abraham makes a treaty
allowing him to live in the land of the Philistines.  Things are going well;
 God is blessing him richly, and then...
CHAPTER 22: 1-19:   "THE BINDING OF ISAAC";  ABRAHAM IS FAITHFUL;  THE
COVENANT IS REAFFIRMED
