The foothills around the areas of the more famous tombs found in the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, provide many tombs of the nobles of the New Kingdom (in particular the 18th Dynasty). The areas in which the tombs are found are-

Sheikh abd el-Qurna

Asasif

Deir el-Medina

Dra abu el-Neggar

Qurnet Mura'i

The tombs (or chapels) usually consist of two or more chambers cut into the rock which were then painted. The deceased may of been buried in a well which was dug down either in the tomb / chapel or in the courtyard in front (although sometimes the mummy would not have been buried here at all). The tombs date from the 6th Dynasty to the Graeco-Roman Period (although the vast majority date from the New Kingdom).

Numbering - As tombs are asigned a number on their discovery, the tomb numbers are not linked to the area of thier discovery (these tomb numbers are also given a 'TT' which identifies them as a Theban tomb).

Some of the tombs are linked to their own pages which will give more information on that particular tomb / occupant - given the vast number of tombs - this is an ongoing project that will continue until the majority of tombs (hopefully!!) are linked in this way.
