Ordnance Officer's Epaulette Ornament

This was similar to the insignia worn on headgear. The flaming shell design has been used by various branches and units in American and European armies in different periods. It was commonly used by European grenadiers (heavy infantry) and artillery troops. During the period 1832-1851, it was used as a coat skirt ornament by U.S. Army artillery officers. In the American Army the flaming shell symbol became specific to Ordnance and is still in use today.
