Reitz`s legendary Herman Byers dies

by Michael Pointer,Courier staff writer
The west side haslost perhaps its most famous citizen. Former Reitz football coach, Herman Byers, who turned the Panthers into the most successful program in Indiana, died early Monday morning. He was 87. "Herman Byers demanded perfection" said Reitz physical education department chairman Don Henry, who played and coached under Byers. "He was a person that didn`t take alibis. There was always a job to get done and there was only one way to do it. That was his way, the correct way." After graduating from Central High School in 1923, Byers played football at Indiana Univessity, where he was a team captain in 1927. After graduating from IU in 1928, he spent time coaching in Boonville and Goshen High Schools. Byers returned to Evansville to serve as an assistant coach at Bosse in 1941. His legacy began, however, when he took the job at Reitz in 1942. Over the next 26 years, the Panthers were 189-51. They won 14 city championships, 13 Southern Indiana Athletic Conference titles and seven mythical state championships. Byers most famous team was his 1961 state champions, which didn`t allow a point all season. The Panthers were led that season by Don Hansen, who went on to become an all-Big Ten Conference linebacker at Illionis and had a 12-year career in the NFL. The Panthers success under Byers also turned them into a source of pride on the West Side. "The West Side is a community of its own," Byers once said. "you don`t find any better people, Everybody there backs football. It`s a neighborhood thing linked with success." Byers retired after the 1968 season. He made his last appearance at Reitz Bowl on Sept. 25 of last year, when the scool was honoring its 1942 and 1961 teams. The Panthers then shutout Castle 19-0. "we told the kids that night they were meeting a living legend," Reitz coach Bob Gaddis said. "Theres not many people like that in the whole world." Byers record overall was 234-105, making him the seventh- winningest coach in Indiana football history. He also is a member of the Indiana High School Football Hall of Fame.
