Thinking On-line

This is a list of sites I suggest for general thinking on line (mostly on philosophy). You can find some basic information on them in order to make you clear which of them is nearest to your interest. I hope that you would appreciate them. I add also personal opinions.

  • The JMU Media Review, by Sean Cubitt head of Screen Studies, and Dick Rooney, head of Journalism at the John Moores University of Liverpool. I really welcome such a Journal in the rich landscape of Internet Journals, inasmuch its aim is a very good one. Get in touch with it, you won't be deceived!!!
  • The multimedialization of the lifeworld by Göran Sonesson; a good article which sets under critique the easy but reductive use of the informational model for the analysis of communication, and especially Sonesson centers the conceptual problems of such model in the heuristic modellization of multimedia communication.
  • Pictorial Semiotics, also by Goran Sonesson. It is centered on the critique to the concept of iconicity, which is really poor for the comprehension of pictorial texts.
  • Mute Narratives - New Issues in the Study of Pictorial Texts; still by Goran Sonesson, on pictorial texts.
  • Sites of Significance for Semiotics: a good list of links and resources in semiotics by Pascal G. Michelucci of the University of Toronto. Is a very good resource for all people interested in Semiotics and Humanities.
  • Applied Semiotics/Sémiotique Appliquée, a very good semiotic journal edited by Pascal G. Michelucci and Peter G. Marteinson of the University of Toronto. The journal is growing fast and it is really interesting, one of the best on semiotics in the Web. It can be downloaded in zip format.
  • Film-Philosophy. This is a list I find of particular interest. It is a large moderate discussing on Philosophy of moving image culture, i.e. movies; but themes treated are always various, and they deal also with the works of writers as Deleuze and others. There are really good and appreciable contributes. And you have to look at the good list of writings of the electronical saloon of film-philosophy list. Many good works about filmstudies and Critical theory.
  • SINCRONIA, A Journal of Culture Studies for Latin America published by the Social Sciences and Humanities Center at the University of Guadalajara. There are papers dealing with many subjects and most of them are of good level.
  • Collaborative Research on Media: a new entry from Japan. Here you can find an overview of communication's models as well as a problematization of the relation cognition/communication. A good site.
  • Thinknet Elists: this is the famous lists of Kent Palmer, for all tastes and interests. You can also read about his personal philosophy, 'the ontology of fragmentation', and have lessons about 'Ontology and Being'.
  • Bjorn's Guide to Philosophy: This is a VIS (very important site) for philosophers. There is a on-line guide on philosophers, a list of good e-journals and an another list of links related to philosophy.
  • Philosophy: this is a site where you find a list of the most important philosophers of western History. Of each of them you can have some general notes, but what pregnant is that the list offers links where it is possible to find on-line writings of authors treated (unfortunately not of all philosophers) and download them.
  • Semiotic Reviews: an on-line journals edited by the Cyber Semiotic Institute of Toronto. It is a very good site for all people interested in semiotics, communication, literature, anthropology and so on.The journal offers good reviews of recent books on semiotics and communication in general, and appreciable editorials dealing with humanistic studies.
  • Semiotics, System Theory and Complexity: here you find an index edited by Martin Ryder of the Denver University of Colorado about Complexity. A good chanche to think to significational dinamics as something more complex of the sign-meaning mechanic association.
  • Semiotics:this is a good list of links to sites and writings again by Martin Ryder. The material is divided in sections: Primers, Resources,Conferences, People, Readings and Book announcements.
  • Post Modern Philosophy: if you wanna know something more about postmodernism and its many features follow this link and you will be satisfied!
  • The IASS Home Page the site of the International Association for Semiotic Studies, a must for any researcher and scholar interested within semiotics and its developing.
  • Gregor Bertrand Lee's Home Page: a very interesting webspaces with a lot of material, resources and links within cultural and political theory.
  • CTHEORY: Culture Theory, a magazine dealing with Culture from a postmodern point of view.
  • International Journal for Media and Communication Studies: a good international journal with an excellent international editorial board.
