March 8, 2011 Program Clay Mountcastle "Punitive War: Confederate Guerillas and Union Reprisals" 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, Richmond, VA., 4602 Cary Street Road, 23226 A parking lot is available behind the church with an entrance off the parking lot to the left and down a few stairs. (map in August's newsleter) Clay Mountcastle is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, currently assigned to the Combat Studies Institute at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He earned his BA in History from the Virginia Military Institute in 1994 and his PhD in History from Duke University in 2006. For three years, he taught Military History at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Mountcastle's other duty assignments have included tours in Germany, Croatia and Bosnia, Korea, and most recently, a tour in Iraq with US Army Special Operations Command. This summer, he will assume the position of the Professor of Military Science at the University of Washington in Seattle. In September of 2009, his first book, Punitive War: Confederate Guerrillas and Union Reprisals was published by the University Press of Kansas. He has spoken on Civil War topics at academic conferences and has addressed a number of organizations interested in American military history, to include the New York Military Affairs Symposium, the Civil War Round Table of New York, and the Civil War Roundtable of Fairfield County, Connecticut. His most recent opportunity to discuss the topic of tonight's talk was with the Civil War Round Table of Decatur, Illinois. His presentation will cover the many ways that guerrilla warfare shaped the Civil War, and in particular, the Union Army's attitude toward Southern civilians and the limits of war.
