Basic Strategies

Welcome to the very first page on the Internet devoted to Wipeout 64. This page has everything you need including pictures, weapon info, ship info, top times, and strategy for each level and each class. Just click the links at the top of the page and you’ll be on your way. Before you go, however, I would like to give you some basic strategies for this game. You may very well have your own strategies, but I will give you mine anyway. Here we go! First of all, if you are just starting the game, choose the Feisar. It has the best turning and shield energy, but the lowest speed. This is ideal for beginners because you can make any turn in the game without braking on the first two difficulty levels with the Feisar. You will need to learn to use all of the ships for the challenge mode however. As tempting as it is to blow their (the game’s) weak time trial and race records away, try to beat all of the challenges first. This will earn you the best ship, new track and the best weapon system. More on Challenge Mode later. The new ship called the Pirhana II, has maxed out abilities in all categories. It is almost weird the first time you play it because it has faster speed and it turns easier. It is a very smooth handling ship. Other things to consider: The most important thing to know in challenge mode on Rapier and Phantom is the use of the air-brake. Press Z to air-brake around left turns and R to air brake around right turns. When you are flying at top speed, you need to press the air brake well before you get there. If you press R and right or Z and left around turns, you will notice that you take the turn wide almost exactly like your powersliding in Mario Kart. This is what you want to do. Braking is not at all necessary in Vector and should be very, very seldom used in Venom, if at all. Another thing, NEVER use the autopilot on Vector or Venom mode unless there is a turn that you can’t make at all. As soon as they make the turn for you, hit C-Down to deactivate it. In Rapier and Phantom mode, know on each track where you plan to use it. I’ll go in to detail on this on the weapons page. Next thing, on race mode, you need to know how to get the turbo start. In time trial mode it automatically does it for you. In order to get this boost, hold A to get the thrust up towards the top of the meter in the lower right hand corner. There is a turn in the meter about ¾ of the way up. Get the thrust meter up a little bit past that bend in the meter and keep it there until he says go by tapping A. This should get you a fast start and get you in the thick of the race from the beginning instead of having to catch up. Finally, back to Challenge Mode. If you beat the Race Challenge by getting at least a bronze in all 6 events, then the Velocitar track will be unlocked. Similarly, when you beat the Time Trial Challenge, the ultra smooth Pirhana II ship will be unlocked. Finally, when you beat the Weapon Challenge, the new Cyclone Weapon System will be unlocked. This gives you double the power with each weapon while not giving the same advantage to your opponent. This is huge because some opponents, such as the Feisar or AG Systems, can be taken out with one flash bomb (an X) or one quake (a Q). Once you beat all three challenges, a new Super Combo Challenge is unlocked. This, and I am speaking from experience here, is extremely tough. This combines the Race and Weapon Challenges. They require you to come in the top 3 AND destroy a certain amount of other ships. Work hard at it and you will eventually beat this. Once you beat this, they congratulate you and entice you to try to get a gold on all of the Challenges. Now, you have to go back and try to get a gold on all of the Challenges and this is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. I now have golds on 23 of the 24 Challenges. Once you get golds on all 6 Challenges of any Mode, a Gold Challenge will be unlocked for that Mode. Unfortunately, once you beat one of them, nothing happens. I do believe that if you beat all of the Gold Challenges, something will happen. This seems extremely difficult though. Like I said, I have 23 Golds and 1 Silver for the original Challenges. I have beaten all 3 Gold Challenges that I have access to. These are: Beat Velocitar on Phantom with the Qirex. Get 30.5 seconds on Sokana on Phantom with the Pirhana II. Last and definitely least, kill 6 on Klies Bridge on Phantom with the AG Systems. The one Challenge that I cannot get a gold on is Challenge 5 of Super Combo. They ask you to come in first, and kill 8 on Machaon II with the Auricom who has the weakest super weapon. The best that I have done is 2nd and 6 kills and 3rd and 7 kills. Both were extremely lucky however. I have not ever killed 8 in this Challenge and I have come in first only once, and I only killed 4 that time.. Once I beat this, the last Gold Challenge will be unlocked. If any of you have beaten Challenge 5 of Super Combo and/or the Gold Challenge for Super Combo, please E-mail Me. Also let me know if you have any other cheats, strategies, times, or anything else for that matter. Thanks for reading and I hope my site proves itself useful.
