Welcome to Mathews County This unofficial site is dedicated to the previous crew, mainly because I had two girls compete. So I will try to maintain it as a tribute to all the good times we and the other parents had for several years. I will be changing the format in the future to more of a historical theme with old photo's.The official page can be found by going to "http://www.tiercom.com/crew/index.html" but don't click here... I'm gonna keep you here a bit!

The crew rows from "Williams Wharf", located at the foot of S.R. 614, Mathews Virginia, on the East River. Williams Wharf is an ongoing public, community project involving major restorations, and will soon be a Community "Rowing/Small Craft Landing" .

One of the nicest launching and recovery facilities on the East Coast!

Some "Blue Devil Crew" History
And How They Did In '96

Coached by Tim Ulsaker, and assisted by Vernon Rowe. Vernon was one of Tim's first rowers.

Oh yeah!... can't forget the dedicated parents, Grandparent's, family and friends you surely heard yelling....... "GO.... Mathews "!.... If you've been to a race.

"Blue Devil" crew has grown to over 40 rowers since it started in 1985 (women 's started in 1990). Not bad considering student pop. is near 400 !

The "Blue Devil's" trained hard and it showed on race day! They had an exciting and successful season in '96. We finished the season with a Gold, and Three Bronze Medals at The Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Phili. The Women's Varsity Quad (undefeated for the season) won the "Bride's Plate" Trophy. The Blue Devil's also captured two gold medals at Scholastic Nationals in Occoquan.
We capped off the season with several medals at "Sculling National's" at Occoquan.

I will be updating soon as I get some new photo's and. Be sure to come back soon.

At the '96 Scholastic Nationals the "Women's Varsity Quad" had an exciting finish coming from behind and winning the Gold! They were "undefeated" for the season!

Last summer thirteen rower's trained with The Mobjack Boat Club, and Coach Ulsaker. This crew, composed of Mathew's Youth and "Blue Devil Alumni", and their cheering supporters went to The "Royal Canadian Henley Regatta". Now that was an experience... tenting in the downpour! Who could forget "The Maid of the Mist", in Niagara Falls.

"Mobjack Boat Club" did well against some tough competition. Three of our seven crews went on to the finals. The men's Junior Double was top finisher for Mobjack, placing second.
Needless to say, this opportunity would not have been realized without the overwhelming support , and generous donations from friends, and community, which is typical of "Little 'Ol Mathews"

Many "Blue Devil" Alumni have gone on to row in college... such as Washington College, Rutgers, Davidson, Virginia Tech., and Univ. Of Charleston at W .V., University of Virginia, Old Dominion University.

The first Sat. in May each year, Mathews hosts Northern Virginia schools we compete with during the season, as well as other interested crews. They have many races, from Double's, Pairs, on up to the always exciting "Octuple 8's". Plenty of great food, T-Shirts of course and fun for the whole family.
