The rainforest of the Peruvian amazon has the largest number of species
in the world. Peru has created reserves and national parks to protect these
areas and provide places for scientists to study and persons interested
in travel to visit. Among the reserves set aside for these purposes is the
Pacaya-Samiria Nature Reserve. The Pacaya-Samiria Reserve is located in
the jungles of northern Peru in the Department of Loreto. The Reserve is
the largest in Peru and lies between the Marañon and Ucayali rivers.
The Pacaya-Samiria Reserve can be reached from Tarapoto by a one hour flight
in 8 passenger plane contracted specifically for our guests or for small
groups we will hire a motorboat to travel from the city of Yurimaguas on
the Huallaga river.
On arrival at the entrance to the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve you will be accompanied
by one or more local guides who paddle the dugout native canoes, giving
you the opportunity to observe the incredible quantity of wildlife. The
guides know the Pacaya-Samiria reserve like the palm of their hand and can
point out the numerous species of animals found there. The best time to
visit the rainforest is during the dry season from June to October to see
the greatest variety of mammals but the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve can be visited
at any time of the year.
Among the species that can be found there are: several species of monkeys,
sloth, ocelot, jaguar, tapir, fresh water dolphins and hundreds of varieties
of birds. Los Chancas Expeditions offers the visitor the opportunity to
visit this area by native dugout canoe accompanied by English speaking guide
with the option of a professional biologist expert in the amazon rainforest.
