The Newsletter

After the crew started getting together again in 1976, 30 years after the 832 was decommissioned, a more or less regular Mad Hooligan newsletter was founded. Many shipmates looked at this new newsletter as a continuation of the PortHole Press, the ships newspaper of WW2. The Port Hole Press was a mimeograph sheet written irregularily during the time the 832 was in the Pacific.

Brooks Hamilton, who at this time was Professor of Journalism at the University of Maine, wrote, printed and distributed the Mad Hoolligan newsletter until his death in 1996. Being an old newspaper reporter, his writings have been a hard act to follow. Nevertheless, in a humble way, Bob and Doris Franzago have taken on the task of not letting the newsletter be discontinued. Four times a year a mailing is made to approximately 100 shipmates, next of kin, and friends of the Mad Hooligans.
