The Most Wonderful Gift That You Can Give A Child

There is a poem, whose creator I do not know, and (forgive me if I do not get this completely right)it goes along the lines of:

You may have riches and wealth untold,
Diamonds and pearls, silver and gold;
But, richer than I, you will never be
for I had a mother who read to me.

Reading to your child is one of the greatest gifts you can give him/her. Introducing books at an early age, and fostering a love of them, is akin to giving them a ticket to travel where-ever they wish; a book is a magical ride into their imagination, the world around them and things, real and not-so-real. You can use books to teach morals and manners, to allay fears, to amuse, and to provide knowledge. Children who are taught to appreciate time spent with books, grow up more readily able to learn to read (and often read earlier than their counterparts from non-reading homes) simply because they DESIRE to. Later on, this transmits to an ease of researching and finding materials for projects, simply because books are not seen as an enemy, more like a beloved friend.

I urge you all to read to your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews - the neighbour's kids even! Illiteracy is a sad affliction, and apart from those with a disability preventing the learning of reading, is more often than not simply a missed opportunity. Reading begins LONG before the children start school - on a lap, held in arms of love, with words softly spoken and pictures pointed out.

And despite arguments to the contrary, don't allow some to tell you that quality is all important in reading material. In some senses it is, but if you have a child who has difficulty in reading, encourage him to read ANYTHING he wants to. Comic books. Books about things he has an interest in - no matter how un-academic they might be. Reading comes easier the more a child is comfortable with it!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Of all the books that I have ever read my children, my grandchildren or the countless others in my care over the years, one of my all-time favourites is

This enthralling story of a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly, is a wonderful addition to any bookshelf. Children love the bright colours and get great joy of reciting what the caterpillar eats during the week. No wonder he needs to sleep! Children learn the days of the week and how to count, as well as a first lesson in biology. Eric Carle is a master of his craft.
This edition is a board book, very suitable for little hands and able to take a lot of mistreatment! Approximate size is 5"x7.12"x.74". It ships in 2-3 days.
