From May 31 until June 14 1999 we went for a Fly and Drive vacation on Lesbos, followed by a one week stay in a villa on Chios.

Last year we toured for a week across the mainland of Greece and
stayed a week on Lefkas. The year before we did the Fly and Drive trip on the Peloponnesos
and stayed a week in Kardamili. This year we wanted to see again another part of Greece so
we decided for two island, Lesbos and Chios. |
The second week we had booked a villa in Volissos, far away from the tourist area's on the east coast. The arrangement included the use of a car, which you definitely needed, because we stayed 1.5 km from Volissos. |

Our trip started Monday may 31 9.30, when the train-taxi picked us up and brought us to Schiedam Station. We took the train to Schiphol where our plain left at about 13.00 for Athens. On the Athens airport we, unfortunately had to wait until around 22.30 before our plane to Lesbos would take off. Too short to go and visit Athens and to long for this airport. We landed around 23.30 and were welcomed by our hostess. She gave us our (open) jeep and showed us the way to drive to Petra. That was to the other side of the island, and that in the middle of the night. The adventure really started there. We only had a very small map of Lesbos (out of a brochure), but without much problems we arrived around 1.30 in Petra, where the hotel owner was still waiting for us. We immediately went to bed after this long and tiring day.
The next day, Tuesday, the trip really started:
A very short trip to Molivos
Down to the south-western area to Skala Eressos
Going to the center to Skala Kalloni
Drive to the long quiet beach of Vatera
Via the mountain of Olympos to Plomari
Back to Mytilini
Drive to the north and in the evening by boat to Chios
