Plans Being Made To Release "Wilson Project" Sessions

The following is from an article by Ron Weekes at GaryUsher.com.

"Besides negotiating with domestic labels to release these first three Usher produced albums, the biggest project that Gary Usher, Jr. has on his list is to get the so-called “Wilson Project” sessions from 1986 finally released.  Usher describes these demos from sessions between his father and Brian Wilson as basically “homework sessions” to get Wilson back into the studio for the first time in almost ten years.  Although some of these sessions have surfaced over the years, none have been legitimately licensed from House of Usher
Productions, the owner of the recordings.  Even though considered strictly high quality demos, Gary Usher was such a studio perfectionist that the demos stand on their own as highly listenable music."

More Reissues - Rarities Set Due!

Beach Boys go digital

Fans can catch a big wave of Beach Boys music this year, as Capitol Records salutes the band's 40th anniversary by reissuing 16 albums, packaged in pairs, with original packaging restored, bonus tracks and digitally remastered sound. Many albums have been out of print in  anticipation of the upgrade project.
"Our strategy was to get the entire repertoire out there sounding absolutely  as good as it can," says EMI catalog executive Herb Agner.

The eight CD sets are Surfin' Safari/Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl/Shut Down Vol. 2, Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long, The Beach Boys
Today!/Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), Party/Stack-O-Tracks, Smiley Smile/Wild Honey, Friends/20/20 and Beach Boys Concert/Live  in London. Hawthorne California, a two-disc anthology of B-sides,
alternate takes and rarities (including home rehearsals ), is due in May.

"We've seen such a resurgence of interest in the band over the past three  years," Agner says, noting the success of a Pet Sounds box set and last
year's ABC biopic. " The Beach Boys are really America's band. They have a timeless appeal."

The band gets a lifetime achievement Grammy at the Feb. 21 awards show in Los Angeles.

Preliminary Injunction Issued In Beach Boys Suit

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction barring the release of new editions of early-'60s material by the Beach Boys, Billboard Bulletin reports. U.S. District Court Judge Harry Hupp's ruling is a victory for the Beach Boys' label Brother Records, which on Dec. 20 sued Pampa, Texas-based label Surf's
Up! Records and its operator Brad Elliott, Los Angeles label Deck Records, and Deck owner Bruce Morgan, claiming trademark  infringement.

Morgan -- son of the late Hite and Dorinda Morgan, who recorded the disputed material -- filed his own suit the same day. A U.S. District Court judge had earlier granted a temporary restraining order barring the sale or release of the
Beach Boys tracks at issue.

Hupp's ruling apparently enjoins the release of the two-CD set "First
Wave - The Complete Hite Morgan Sessions," a Surf's Up! project
that was to be distributed by L.A.-based Collectors' Choice Music. Gordon Anderson, VP of Collectors' Choice, says,
"We're canceling all existing customer orders ... I've got to pull the plug."

Brian Wilson TNT Tribute On Tap

Continuing its "Masters Series" of tribute concerts, cable outlet TNT is next looking to fete former Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson. Tentatively scheduled for March 30, the presumably star-studded affair will take place at New York's
historic Radio City Music Hall, according to a source.

A spokesperson for TNT could not confirm the event or its subject, saying only that the network's programmers are looking at a number of options for the
next tribute concert, and that a spring tribute is likely.

Wilson has been quite active in 2000, playing a two-leg North American tour that concluded in November with a three-night stand at B.B. King's nightclub in New
York. Several dates during the run featured a symphony orchestra backing Wilson for a complete performance of the Beach Boys' landmark 1966 album "Pet Sounds," and all included Wilson performing with his backing band, the Wondermints.

The tour also produced the release "Live At The Roxy Theatre" (BriMel) recorded over two nights in April in Los Angeles.

In June, Wilson was among those inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame at the organization's annual dinner in New York. Former Beatle Paul McCartney
had the honor of inducting him, while pop sibling group Hanson performed his Beach Boys classic "God Only Knows" during the ceremony.

TNT's "Masters Series" was inaugurated in 1998 with  "Burt Bacharach: One Amazing Night," and has since  included celebrations of the music of Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, and Joni Mitchell.
