Malacca Glorious History

The Malay village at the Malacca river became the attraction and first became famous when Parameswara whose Muslim name was Sultan Mahmud Shah became the first sultan to rule Malacca. The supremacy of the Malacca empire became to spread wider. Strategic location of its fort, between the east and west, and became the pulse towards the prosperity of the Malay world. Malacca became the central focus of traders from the Malay islands, Europe, Arabia, China as well as other countries. For scholars and intellectuals, Malacca became an important centre for the spread and growth of Islam in the nusantara region. Malacca's fame and prosperity made it the target for conquest and colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch and British.

The capital of Malacca state, Malacca City, is also located within the area of the Malacca Municipal Council. It is strategically located; i.e. 100 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, 150 kilometers north of Singapore and 2 hours by Ferries from Dumai, Indonesia. It has been estimated in year 1995 the population residing in the municipality area will be about 335,000 people, which is 62 percent of the total population of the Malacca State, and the figure is said to reach the 1 million mark by year 2010. Various ethnic groups Malay, Chinese, Indians, Portuguese and Babas exists in Malacca particularly in the Malacca Municipal Council Historic City area. In term of numbers, the Malays are the dominant group. While the minority groups comprise Chetis, Babas and Portuguese.
