Scientists are pondering the question whether the Panda is a bear quite some time now. And furiously disagree. Some say the panda is a raccoon, but lately most think that indeed, it is a bear. One of the Panda's famous features is its thumb. This, technically, is not a thumb but a wristbone that has been extended. The Panda uses it to grip bamboo tightly, allowing it to eat with one paw. Pandas are often thought to be very lazy, due to the fact that they lay around most of the day. Not true. They are simply always on the brink of starvation. They lay down and sit around to conserve energy. The Panda's diet consists almost solely of bamboo. This while its stomach is that of a meat-eater. So, the Panda does not proces the bamboo efficiently, causing its need to eat a lot of bamboo. A big lot. Pandas live solitary. Given the fact that female panda's are only willing to mate one day per year, this is not handy. It is therefore one of the many reasons the panda-bear is threatened by extinction. Is it not easy to breed pandas in captivity. The first succes was recorded in 1955, when Ming Ming was born Beijing Zoo. Read here for more information on captive breeeding. Probably successes in captive breeding will prove crucial in the panda's future. The scientific name for the Giant Panda is Ailuropoda melanoleuca.
