TEACCH At Home:
Matching

Goal:  Your child will match a variety of well-known objects.

Materials:  Three matched sets of items you would like your child to know the names of.

Stimuli: Say "______(name of child), match _________(name of object).
 

Step 1:  Place object 1 on the table alone in front of your child.  Hand your child the matching object.  He or she will match the two with full physical prompts.

Step 2:  Your child will match the two with partial physical prompts.

Step 3:  Your child will match the two with a model.

Step 4:  Your child will match the two with only a verbal prompt.

Step 5:  Repeat Steps 1-5 with object #2.

Step 6:  Place object #1 and object #2 on the table in front of your child. Repeat Steps 1-4.

Step 7:  Place object #1 and object #2 on the table in front of your child. Repeat Step 5.

Step 8:  Place object #1 and object #2 on the table in front of your child. Repeat steps 1-5 for requested object, randomly alternated.

Step 9:  Repeat steps 1-5 with object #3.

Step 10: Place object #1, #2, and #3 on the table in front of your child. Repeat step 9.

Step 11:  Place objects #1, #2, and #3 on the table in front of your child. Repeat step 8.

Step 12:  Place objects #1, #2, #3, and #4 in front of your child. Continue pattern of steps as above for as many objects as you desire.
 

Matching Ideas:  cup, block, spoon, sock, plate, marker, legos, glove, toothbrush, small toys.
Later Matching Ideas:  pictures, shapes, colors, animals, letters, numbers, words.
Sequence of Matching Learning: 1) object to object; 2) picture to picture; 3) picture to line drawing; 4) object to picture (shoe, mitten, key, etc.); 5) object to line drawing; 6) similar objects.
