| Our whole family went to look at houses to buy, so we could move. We went to look at one old house that had trees around it. It was a small house, and neighbors close by, but no one was around. We wanted to get inside to get a better look at it. There was a screen door up a few stairs from the ground, at the side of the house.
Tami and I were a little scared, but excitement took over for me -- I was exploring! We walked into a small kitchen -living area. The carpet was torn and the shades at the windows were burnt. There were cobwebs everywhere. As we walked through the house, it seemed there was another presence there. Tami was too scared to keep on, so she went out with Mom. Tom and Dad and I continued through it, although it was too dark to see much of anything.
Suddenly, I realized that I was alone. I found a wooden porch in front of the house, with vines growing up beside it. The presence seemed nearer. I discovered that I was actually lost when I tried to find my way out. When I turned around, the small room became a large foyer, with three doorways (one straight ahead and one on either side of me) and a winding staircase in the far left side of the foyer from me. Desperate to find my way out, I thought climbing the stairs might help.
When I went up the stairs, there was an old woman sitting on the side of a bed, looking out of a window at a lovely green field glistening in the sunshine. She didn't acknowledge my presence or speak, or do anything but sit there. In one corner of the room, behind her bed, there was an old trunk. A key lay beside it.
When I looked down, to my horror, the whole floor was covered with cobwebs. It made it hard for me to walk, but I finally made my way to the trunk and opened it with the key. It was empty except for a small, wooden box. I picked up the box and ran back down the stairs. The door to the outside was back where it should be. I went out to join the others and we left with the box. I never looked inside it.
