Expensive Breakfast
9-3-01

Lara, her friend Cheryl and I went to get breakfast after going out partying one night. We stopped at a grocery store so we could get a cheap and light breakfast. We went up to the counter to order, looking at the menu overhead (like in a fast food place, but at a grocery store checkout line).

I went through first, and noticed a newspaper lying right next to the cash register, on the conveyer belt thing. The top page advertised a special price for a breakfast combo of a muffin, coffee and a bowl of fruit. I thought that sounded good, so I told the lady at the checkout that I would order that, and pointed to the ad in the newspaper.

She entered my order in the cash register, handed me a bag with my food in it and the receipt. As I was stepping aside to pay, I looked at the receipt and it said $28!! I thought, no way, there's a mistake, since the meal I ordered was only $3. I asked her what the other $25 was for, and she said it was for my use of the newspaper! Totally unlike my real-life self, I got extremely upset and argued with her about it and said it was outrageous and just a scam. She said, I'm sorry, that's just our policy and there are other customers in line, so please move on.

My friends just stood in amazement and, for Lara, her usual passivity. I just took my bag of food and walked out. Lara just said she couldn't believe it and made a point of not letting her eyes even wander down to the newspaper. I told her that I should just go back in there and demand the newspaper, since I paid more than enough for it, but I didn't.
