Commissioning New Classical Music

Would YOU like some music to be specially written for you or your family or friends? If the idea of a new musical work reflecting something of importance to you is attractive, read on.

Some possibilities:

Your newly-composed piece may end up tagging along with my other works on a CD release, or find its way into a film score...possibly earning you royalties one day. What's really in it for you?

Like many composers I really enjoy writing music for a specific performer or event. For music I have composed for films, the theatre, choirs and special events, click here.

Funding for commissions can come from private sources or government agencies. Private funds can come from individuals, companies, organisations, and performing groups. Money from these sources can be added to government funding if the timing is right. (See my Links page for government funding bodies.) Please note that government funding needs to be applied for well in advance (perhaps a year ahead), cannot be retrospective, and such projects can't even start until the specified date (that's bureaucracy for you).

I like writing for solo voice, choirs and also for many (classical) instruments. Perhaps you are a poet who can write lyrics for me to set to music. Click "What's really in it for you?" for details of the instruments and groups I've already composed for, and for details about my training in orchestration.

My musical style varies in its characteristics, but is nevertheless always my own. I could describe it very broadly as "slightly modern classical". I WON'T try to somehow relate it to neo-tonal, neo-classical, dodecaphonic, atonal, avant-garde, modern, classical, romantic, post-modern or any such thing. But my music may at times encompass elements of any of these styles and others.

Topics which interest me include saving old-growth forests, wilderness, other green issues, social equality, oppression of minorities, transgender issues, intersex issues, nuclear weapons, nuclear power, alternative power sources, historical / geographical Western Australian themes. Maybe you have another issue I should get interested in?

As you will hear from any samples of my music, my works are novel and original. But they're well-crafted and accessible. It may take a couple of hearings for some people to get familiar with my style, but I think I always manage to take the attentive listener into consideration. Several publishers have chosen to publish my works, and one piece was on the AMEB's exam list for grade one piano for many years, so they must think my music is OK.

So phone me on 08 9381 2308 or send me an email at hmpperth@it.net.au and we can talk it over.
