The Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Quiz League operates on Wednesday evenings throughout Winter & Spring each year.  Our current season commenced on 21st October 2001 and will run through till Spring 2002.  Why not visit our comprehensive 'FAQ' page which fully explains how we operate.

Last season ran from November 2000 to March 2001, after which teams took part in cup competitions.  We had some 34 teams grouped into six conferences.  Five of these were based upon Bradford and Wakefield in West Yorkshire, though they drew from a catchment area encompassing Castleford, Halifax, Ossett & South Leeds. The sixth of the conferences was made up of eight Sheffield-based teams.

Our regular season is augmented with two knock-out contests.  On 25th April 2001, in the premier event, the White Lion of Armley in Leeds were victorious in the 32nd annual "Champion of Champions" match.  The same evening, the Railway of Mirfield won the final of the Wise Old Owls Yorkshire Plate (contested by teams eliminated in the early stages of the "Champion of Champions" competition).

Fuller details can be found on our FAQ page.   This has sections for licensees, captain's questions on league matters, players' questions on match format and a section of interest to potential commercial sponsors.

In a typical season a team can expect to play about seventeen matches, more if they have good run in the knock-out competitions.

Each fixture is a head to head contest between two teams of four, featuring seven team and two individual rounds.  All but one of the rounds have eight questions (four to each side).

After the main contest there is a ten question 'friendly' round.  The score from this round doesn't count towards the match result.  However, it is played in deadly earnest since most teams treat it as a 'beer round', the losers having to buy the victors a drink!

Teams earn points for results in league matches.  As well as points for a win or draw, teams gain bonus points for reaching certain target scores in the match.  This way, even if a team senses the are likely to be beaten, they've still got something to play for!

At the conclusion of the league season, those teams topping each conference are awarded trophies (to keep!).  And, to record their achievements, winners & runners-up in each conference also receive a distinctive certificate from the Wise Old Owls.

Fuller details can be found on our FAQ page.   This has sections for licensees, captain's questions on league matters, players' questions on match format and a section of interest to potential commercial sponsors.

Each week Wise Old Owls mail out questions to the home sides in good time for Wednesday night fixtures.  Questions arrive sealed in special, custom-made "tamper evident" security pouches.

Included along with the match questions every week are score-sheets and a newsletter carrying full details of the previous week's results (Yorkshire-wide) and current league standings.  Plus, as an added sweetner for teams & their sponsoring licensees, we also enclose a special 20 Question Pub Quiz.

The pub quiz is for the team, or licensee, to use as they see fit.  It is envisaged they use this to amuse their fellow regulars on another evening, raising a few bob in the process towards the Wise Old Owls' league fee (from just £40 per team).
