Field Care Recommendations For Your Catch

SHOULDER MOUNTS:

Do not cut the throat! Belly cut should stop at the briskit. Cut completely around the chest behind the brisket.Cut around the leg at the knee. Then cut up on the back side of the leg. (Do not cut the armpit area) Next starting at the back of each antler, cut to between the ears making a V, then cut along the back of the neck to the chest cut. This will allow the removal of the body and the neck from the cape. Shinning the head should be done by someone experienced or who has more detailed instructions than are given here.

RUGS:

Eviscerate animal from the anus to under the head. Front leg cuts are made starting at the foot. Cut from the middle of the "wrist" down the inside center to the chest. Hind leg cuts are made from the heel to the anus following the back side of the leg. Note: It is important to always start at the foot as this will help in making the correct cuts.

BIRDS:
Try not to let your dog retrieve a bird you may want to have mounted. Do not field dress the bird. Place cotton or some other absorbent material in the beak. Next, use the leg from a pair of panty hose and place the bird head first into it. Take to taxidermist or freeze for shipping

FISH:
Do no field dress any fish you may want to have mounted. To keep a live fish from flopping around and scarring itself, wrap it in a damp towel. If you can not get it to a taxidermist within 24 hours, cover the fish with lots of table salt or Borax, wrap it in a damp towel and then wrap tightly in a plastic bag. Keep it on ice or freeze it until you can get it to a taxidermist.
