Sloan Stories

Andy
This is a sad story. It takes place in October of '98. Sloan were coming to my
hometown Lethbridge to play at the Zoo, the University bar. I was 15 years old
at this time, so of course I couldn't go. So instead of moping around the house
and feeling sorry for myself, I went out with friends and tried to have a good
time anyway (not too successfully, might I add.) Little did I know that my
friend Natasha from Calgary (see her story above) had come to Lethbridge to
hang out with the boys at the soundcheck, and our mutual friends Amy and Kim
had gone with her. They ate supper with Chris (my then-favorite member... hell,
he probably still is) at the school cafeteria, and Amy brought the topic of ME
up, and what do you know? They head over to the payphone to give me a call. Was
I home? No. When did I find out? The next day at school from some OTHER friend.
I had a test right then too. I think I failed it, I was so close to crying at
that moment. Lucky enough though, I have since met Chris and the boys twice
(I was also at the Feb. 25 show mentioned about, where Chris bought us FRIES,
not fires). So it all turned out good :)

I went to the Sloan concert in Calgary on Feb. 25, 2000. Me and my
friend Cristina went early to the show and ended up hanging out with Chirs and
about 10 other people for about an hour. Chris gave us $20 to buy fires for
everyone and he wrote "Kyo hitsamabushi wo tabimashita" on my Japanese binder,
which means "Today, for the longest time I ate." I was front row during the
concert and I was getting pretty squished, due to everyone behind me. Jay kept
looking at me and smiling, and after the show when I got him to sign my binder,
he apologized for me getting squished! What a nice guy!

My fantastic Sloan story takes place at the free concert/autograph session at
the Halifax HMV on Sept. 21st, 1999. While waiting in line to get autographs,
I noticed Chris was staring in my direction. He left his seat at the autograph
table to join me in line, and it turned out that he was admiring the Rush
t-shirt I was wearing. He says to me something like "Oh wow, that's such a
great shirt, I have to buy it for Patrick for his birthday!" So, of course, I
agreed. We went to the backroom of the HMV and exchanged t-shirts. I tried to
hang around to see Chris give the shirt to Patrick, but the HMV employees
forced me out. Two nights later on the Much Music Video Awards, what shirt was
Patrick wearing? Why, my Rush t-shirt of course. Hurray!

It was October 99, Sloan's first visit to lovely Australia. I saw them at the
Sydney show, and was hanging around a bit. From the corner of my eye, I saw
Patrick. We spoke for about 10-15 minutes. What a nice guy! We chatted the
usual Rock God to Ecstatic Fan talk. I had been speaking to Mike Nelson via
e-mail before they came out about the shows and I tried to meet him. I asked
Patrick and he described Mike to me. He pointed Chris and Jay out as they walked
backstage so he left to get ready. Anyway, a great gig, they played alot of new
stuff, and we all begged and chanted for the Classics. (THANKS HEAPS FOR THOSE
GUYS). After the show, they came out the front and signed my poster and about 3
tickets for friends. Chris took about 2 of my un-signed tickets to add to his
collection, and Patrick pointed me to Mike. Thanks for coming out!

So many Sloan stories to tell... so little time... Okay the second (and most memorable time)
i met sloan was at an oct '98 show of theirs... of course after the show, chris and jay came
out immeditately to meet everyone, but andrew and patrick were backstage somewhere havin' a
beer so me and 4 of my pals (HUGE sloan fans, of course!) chanted their names until they came
out!! I got patrick's (my personal fave) autograph last and then I hugged him. I was so excited
afterwards that I didn't hear him joking around with me, but all i know is that he said "stinky"
in a sentence. I thought he was talking about me (cuz i was in the moshpit, and sweaty), so I
was sad for a while. Then, at the Stampede july '99 show I met chris and jay again, and I joked
around with jay for awhile (he borrowed my pen to sign autographs!!) and I told him how I thought
patrick said I was stinky. he said patrick probably said that HE was stinky, not me, cuz their all
really paranoid about that..! . so i felt better... until patrick finally came out. He looked up,
took one look at me and ran away. (i swear) Maybe it was really me so was stinky at the Oct
'99 show.
SgtPeppr:
"On Friday, November 27. 1998 I saw Sloan in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. My pictures of
the concert itself didn't turn out well...Nov.28th (the day after we went to the concert) we
went to Fred's Records in downtown St.John's. We met Jay Ferguson in there and talked to him a
bit, then we had this picture taken
outside of Fred's Records. Then Chris Murphy came across the street and we got a picture with both him & Jay." taken from
SgtPeper's site as offered.

Heres my not too exciting, run of the mill sloan encounter: After their July 99 show at the
Stampede, I met Chris and gave him a hug..., oh yeah then we jetted down to Las Vegas and got
hitched in a secret 3 AM ceremony!!

October 26, 1998. Me and 3 friends went to the Winnipeg Sloan show. It was fantastic, of
course, and then afterwards we went to go meet the guys and hang out with some Sloan fans we
knew. We went up to Jay first, and a friend (Laurel) asked for him to sign her pants. He said
he 'didn't want to ruin them', but she said she'd treasure them, so he wrote 'a treasure'
jay. Aww. then she said 'spanks' instead of 'thanks', and he said 'excuse me?' and turned
around. (want us to spank you Jay?). Anyway, it was very funny and cute. We wanted to make
friends with Chris and Patty too (the only other visible members at the time...) but my mom came
in and made us leave. So that's it. A great time was had by all.
