The Last Olympian Part 1

Disclaimer: The characters Hercules and Iolaus belong to Renaissance Pictures. No money is being made from this story. This story is written for entertainment purposes only. For the Fans..by the Fans..that’s my motto!

Summary: In an alternate universe, Hercules is the Last Olympian after Xena has killed all the other Olympian Gods. Hercules must rescue Iolaus of another world..will he be successful without his half-God powers in saving the Alt Iolaus?

Author’s Note: This story takes place in an alternate universe after the episode “Motherhood” which was I think one of the best Xena episodes ever where in this universe Eve and Xena kill all the Olympian Gods except Aphrodite. In this alternate universe, Hercules did not convert Xena to the ways of goodness. Xena finds a way to kill the Olympian Gods because she finds where Hercules has hidden the Hind’s blood dagger and is able to plunge her chakram into the Hind’s blood dagger thus giving Xena the ability to kill the Olympian Gods. This alternate universe is an universe entirely of my creation. In this universe, Hercules is at the mercy of an evil Xena and Eve with only Iolaus as his only shield of protection.

CHAPTER 1

Xena lets her chakram fly. The heads of Discord, Athena, Hephaetus, Hades and many other Gods fall. As the Great Poseidon sticks his waterform body out of the ocean, Xena’s chakram explodes Poseidon’s body into many water splinters as he is effectively killed. As long as Eve lives, Xena retains the power to kill the Gods.

Xena stands before the many body parts and limbs of the now dead Olympian Gods. She looks at the blood, the gore, the sightless eyes of Discord, Hades, Apollo, Hera, the arms and legs of many Gods spread hodge podge on Olympus.

The fight on Olympus brings thunder and lightening to the mortal world.. Rain pelts down and the rain has a peculiar color about it. The water has a florescent sheen to it almost a silvery color to it. When absorbed by the skin, people start feeling stronger and stronger. The blood of the Gods are now raining down on Earth. The ambrosia of the Gods are now raining down on Earth turning Earth into one huge Olympus.

The villagers gaze up at the sky in wonder. As the rain soaked villagers enter their modest huts, each and every wet villager feel their skin tingle in a way they’ve never known. The mortals of Earth have now the power of the Gods thanks to the ambrosia rain. Earth will never be the same again.

Hercules and Iolaus duck into the safety of the caves as they watch the downpour. Iolaus shakes the rain off his skin but Hercules notices a peculiar aura all around Iolaus..the aura of the Gods. Hercules knows that Iolaus has just been transformed thanks to the ambrosia-like rain absorbed through the skin into an Olympian God.

Iolaus notices Hercules staring at him wide-eyed with wonder and asks self-consciously “Herc, what are you staring at? Haven’t you ever seen a Guardian of the Light get wet before?” Iolaus adds humorously his blue eyes twinkling, not yet aware of his Olympian transformation.

“Iolaus, I know this will sound strange..maybe it’s a half-God thing..but I think you’re an Olympian God..it’s that strange downpour we were just in..the rain has somehow transformed you..I ran into the caves before getting wet, but you didn’t..”

Iolaus then tries to make himself appear and disappear. Iolaus zaps himself to Alchemene’s house and then he zaps himself back to the cave with Hercules with the goofiest smile on his face.

“Hey Herc..you’re right..I’m a God..but you know what Herc..so is everyone else..when I zapped myself to the Corinth marketplace..all the villagers were also zapping themselves from place to place..I think everyone is just as surprised as I am to find themselves Gods..I don’t think there are mortals anymore in this world.”

In all his excitement, Iolaus did not notice that Hercules had started a fire and had nodded off to sleep. The mighty Hercules, son of Zeus, snoring gently by the fire looking very innocent and vulnerable in his sleep, shivering slightly because of the cold night air. Iolaus gladly gives up his own blanket and gently puts it over the gentle Son of Zeus as Hercules continues to snore gently until dawn.

As the sun rises, Hercules rubs his eyes and notices the beautiful rainbow outside. Hercules stretches his arms and aching muscles as he notices that Iolaus has not slept a wink and has been zapping various foodstuffs into the cave.

“Good morning, sleepyhead..here Herc..have some breakfast while I fill you in what’s been happening while you’ve been asleep..” Iolaus begins to pace the cave floor back and forth. However, Hercules notices that like Hermes..he was floating..above the cave floor..pacing back and forth..Hercules, ravenous after not having eaten since the previous day, starts wolfing down his breakfast at a rapid rate.

Iolaus watches in amusement as Hercules eats to appease his half-mortal hunger. Iolaus notices that he is not the least bit hungry. I guess being a God has its advantages. “Well, Herc..it seems that ALL the Olympian Gods are dead.  It seems that when Xena killed the Olympian Gods..all the Gods in all the other countries fell at the same time. The blood and strength of all these Gods then fell in the form of ambrosia rain and that’s why now mortals who have drunk the water have become Gods and that’s all you need to know for now..”

Hercules marveled at Iolaus’ new gifts. Iolaus’ skin has a whole new sheen of healthy color..his hair the color of corn..now glistens like gold..his eyes always so kind..now looks worried..and frightened..but the most wonderous gift of all was the practically blinding aura surrounding Iolaus..it was almost like staring into sunlight..

“When the Gods fell..I felt their deaths..I knew that it was Xena’s chakram that killed all the Gods..I also felt that a great change had taken place in the world but I didn’t know what..it all happened so fast..that strange rain that makes the skin tingle..well it took away my half-God powers..I became mortal last night while everyone else became Gods..I guess that’s why I fell asleep so quickly last night..I was so tired..Iolaus..I know you were trying to tell me something important last night when I fell asleep..I’m sorry I couldn’t stay awake long enough to hear you finish…” Hercules ended sheepishly.

“Don’t worry Herc..I know you were tired..how do you feel now?”Iolaus asks in a concerned voice.

“Oh Iolaus..I’ve been mortal before. I mean I was mortal after I married Serena..remember?..So Iolaus how does it feel to be a God?” Hercules asks his curiosity piqued.

“Well, it’s feels swell. I mean I don’t ever feel tired or hungry. I guess I’ll never have to worry about getting old… or sick..and I have all the time in the world..it’s really fun to be able to zap myself from place to place. I spent last night creating energy balls…you remember those energy balls Ares used to throw at me..those energy balls are really fun to make!” Iolaus creates an energy ball in his hand. Hercules watches in fascination as Iolaus makes the energy ball bigger and bigger and then throws the energy ball into a big oak tree. Hercules listens as the big oak tree burns and then falls to the ground with a loud thud. As if tiring of the game, Iolaus makes the remaining energy balls he had created disappear. He turns around to face Hercules who is trembling from the cold.

“You know Herc..I think it’ll be a lot safer for you..if I take you to your Mother’s house. The Light will protect you there. Come on. . Alchemene’s spirit lives on at her farm.” Iolaus puts his hand on Hercules’ trembling shoulder and zaps Hercules and himself to Alchemene’s farm.

As Hercules and Iolaus arrive at Alchemene’s farm, they notice that they have two visitors. Eve and Xena. Xena is still holding the very chakram that killed the Olympian Gods..a chakram dripping with the blood of the Gods. Both Hercules and Iolaus eyes are drawn to the blood on the chakram. Hercules swallows convulsively as he thinks that he is probably going to be the next victim. With his new godly skills, Iolaus can hear Hercules’ pulse and heartbeat quicken.

Iolaus gives Xena his best smile and gives her a warrior handshake. “Xena, Eve, ..huh..so nice to see you again..why don’t you come inside and make yourself comfortable..” Iolaus zaps Xena and Eve inside the farm. Hercules feels a bit disoriented with all the recent zapping but he also plasters what he hopes is a cheerful smile on his face.

In a very timid voice, Hercules offers his guests refreshments “Ahh Xena, Eve..I’ll go into the kitchen and fix everyone something to eat.” Hercules is eager to leave the room as soon as possible and not have to stare at that bloody chakram. As Hercules turns to leave for the kitchen, he finds himself rezapped in front of Xena and Eve.

Xena says in a very authoritative voice “Hercules, you’re not going anymore.”

Without thinking, Hercules kneels as if in front of royalty “No, of course not.” Shivering involuntarily from both fear and shock, for it was still a shock for Hercules to feel so many godly deaths at one time and now having to confront his own death..once again Hercules azure eyes are drawn to the dried caked blood hanging on Xena’s chakram.

Iolaus takes Hercules lead and also gets on his knees and pleads “Xena, Eve, please spare Hercules’ life. After all, you owe Hercules that much.”

Xena and Eve look vaguely interested in what Iolaus has to say and nod their heads, so Iolaus takes this as a signal to continue “If it weren’t for Hercules protecting you Xena, Eve would never have been born. After all it was Hercules who precipitated the Twilight of the Gods by killing Zeus. He hated the Gods just like you. After all it was Hera who took Hercules’ first wife, Deaindera and his four kids and Zeus didn’t do anything to intervene and it was another Olympian God, Strife who killed Hercules’ second wife, Serena. Hercules has been a champion of mortals, spare his life.” Iolaus pleads with his cerulean blue eyes to Xena’s cold blue eyes.

Before making her final decision, Xena decides to use her newly acquired Godly powers to read Hercules’ mind. Hercules feels Xena prying into his most private thoughts including his most intimate memories of his times with Deiandera and Serena—like he was a virgin when he married Deaindera because he was too shy to date a girl because of his lisp. Xena laughs as she reads these memories while Hercules blushes to his hairline. Iolaus is aware of what Xena is doing and puts his hand on Hercules’ shoulder as a sign of emotional support.

Xena stops laughing and says “He has an interesting mind. He’s very cute. He doesn’t think like an Olympian God. None of the arrogance. He has been a champion of mortals. He did save my daughter’s life. Very well, I will spare his life. I will even give him protection as long as he remains in his mother’s house.” With an evil laughter, Xena and Eve disappear in a blue flash of light.

Even after Xena had disappeared, Hercules remains kneeling on the floor still in a state of shock. His body is trembling all over as he can feel nothing but cold and numbness. Iolaus holds Hercules in his arms and tries to calm Hercules’ nerves and stop the trembling. Tears fall down Hercules’ face as he cries for the deaths of his family and he cries convulsively into Iolaus’ shoulder thoroughly dampening Iolaus’ purple vest with his tears. After much heaving and crying, Hercules finally speaks.

“Iolaus..my lungs hurt..ow..”

“It’ll be alright, Herc..you’ve just cried yourself raw..you’re not a half-God anymore. It’s a mortal thing. Here drink this tea..it’ll calm you down.”

Iolaus lays Hercules down in bed. Iolaus makes Hercules drink the chamomile/poppy tea. Iolaus tucks Hercules into bed. Hercules can feel his eyes get droopy. He takes Iolaus’ hand and says “Don’t leave me alone tonight. Leave the light on..please..”

“Sure Herc, I’ll stay with you until you fall asleep. I promise I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

Iolaus zaps himself a bed right next to Hercules. “See Herc, I’ll be right here. I’m not going anywhere.”

“You know, Iolaus..I think you’re a neat God. It suits you. You look so healthy…so shiny..I am glad you are my best friend..I love …”Before Hercules can finish the sentence, Hercules nods off and falls asleep.

“I know..I love you too..like a brother…I will watch your back..and keep you safe. My brother.”

Hercules awakens to a very sunny morning. He can hear the birds chirping. The sun shines down on his mother’s garden. As he looks around his mother’s house, he sees that the house remains the same. The wall he had already wanted to build for Alchemene remains unfinished. He can see his mother’s grave markers and Jason’s grave markers at the foot of his mother’s garden. The hairs on Hercules neck begin to stand on end which heralds the arrival of aGod.

Iphicles arrives. Hercules stares at his brother in wonder. Iphicles like Iolaus, has an aura around him. He has been transformed into a God. Iphicles sees his now mortal baby brother staring up at him from mother’s bed. Driven by jealousy, all his life, Iphicles has been jealous of Hercules half-God powers and how Hercules is completely helpless and he, Iphicles, is a full God.

“Good morning Hercules” Iphicles attempts to smile, but instead manages to snarl at Hercules.

Hercules shudders as he hears his brother’s greeting. Something about Iphicles’ voice is laced with venom and makes Hercules’ skin crawl. Hercules knows that if Iolaus doesn’t come soon to protect him, he Hercules would be helpless against the jealous wrath of his brother, Iphicles

“Good morning Iph…ah..let me fix you something to eat” Hercules volunteers too eagerly. Hercules has seen wrathful gods before..and Iphicles and he had never been on the best of terms.

“Hercules, as a God,  you know I don’t get hungry. I’ve come here on business. As you know, Xena and Eve have decided to spare your life. They seem to think that because you were the champion of mortals and you saved Eve’s birth by killing Zeus, you should be allowed to live. I’ve come here to warn you, you are NOT safe. The other mortals hated the Olympian Gods that’s why the Olympian Gods were all massacred. Now that every mortal on Earth have god-like powers, it is only a matter of time before someone tries to kill you Hercules. Imagine you thought your life was hell when Hera was after you..now multiply that  by all the people of Greece..a hundred fold…You know Hercules..for once..I am no longer jealous to be you.” Iphicles reads the terror in Hercules’ mind.

“Iph..you..you..would protect me right?” Hercules stutters badly. “I..I..I am..am..your brother..after all..please Iph..”

Iphicles responds “You were always Mother’s favorite..but I have found a way to bring Mother back from the Elysian Fields..she has drunk from the liquor of Lethe and she has no memory of you Hercules..I am her only son now..I will become her favorite son..You have no more family Hercules..you are truly the Last Olympian..Alchemene no longer exists for you..I forbid you to think about her as your mother..if you do..I will rid your memory of any warm and fuzzy memories you may have of her..”

“Iph..please don’t take Mother’s memories away from me..I promise I won’t think about her..I know you can read minds..I promise on the River Styx..” Hercules pleads.

“Very well..since I enjoy seeing you so helpless..I’m in a good mood..I’ll let you keep Mother in your mind..but remember she does not know you..and she loves ME all the more and she loves Amphytrion..she has no memory of Zeus either..we’re a family again, ME, MOTHER and FATHER. No bastard brother to mess that up!”

Hercules helplessly nods his head as he has never seen Iphicles this angry before. I just hope Iphicles gets in a good mood sometime soon. I sure don’t want to be incinerated by one of  those energy balls as he has his hands as Hercules eyes those energy balls fearfully.

Iphicles laughs “You have nobody now..brother dearest..all the Gods are after you..for once I’m glad not to BE  you!”

Iolaus feels Hercules’ shock and rushes to Hercules’ side. He sees Hercules on the kitchen floor in a dead faint and he sees what Iphicles has done to him. Iolaus looks up at Iphicles in anger and prepares to throw an energy ball at Iphicles.

The energy ball hits Iphicles square in the chest and sends him flying through his mother’s house creating a big hole in the wall. Iphicles gets up and sends an energy ball of his own at Iolaus. Iolaus being more alert rolls away and the energy ball incinerates the rest of Alchemene’s house. Amazingly enough, Hercules lays on the floor unharmed with an apparent golden shield over his prone body.

Eve and Xena intervene. Xena steps forward and takes her chakram and knocks both Iolaus and Iphicles senseless to the ground. Hercules stirs from his faint. Hercules faints again.

Xena holds a healing energy ball and restores some energy into Hercules exhausted shocked body. Hercules sits up, rubs his eyes as if from a long sleep..disoriented to see both Iolaus and Iphicles lying on the ground. He sees that his mother’s house has been incinerated like right after one of Hera’s energy balls had destroyed and murdered Deandeira and the kids.

Xena offers words of comfort to Hercules “Hercules, you will be alright. You will be under my protection. you. In a frightened voice, Hercules responds “Xena, I WAS only HALF Olympian. Then after all the mortals became full-gods,  I gave Iolaus all my half-God strength. I would like to think that I have none of my father’s heritage left inside me. I’m fully mortal now. I have no regrets..no resentments towards anybody or anyone..I just want to be safe.. “

Xena gives Hercules a compassionate stare as she continues “The others still see you as the Last Olympian..”

Hercules quickly corrects Xena “Xena, I was only a HALF-God..only HALF Olympian..surely that must count for something?”

Eve intervenes at this point “Yes, your HALF heritage did save your life.”

Hercules furrows his brows in puzzlement “Iolaus told me that my life was spared because I was the champion of mortals..”

Eve continues “Unfortunately, Hercules there are those who feel that your life should not have been spared. There are a lot of people who want you dead. As dead as the other Olympians. I want you to know, Hercules that Xena, Iolaus and I will do our best to protect you, but we are vastly outnumbered. I will always be grateful to you for your intervention when you killed Zeus and that’s why Xena and I spared your life..and because you were born half-mortal. Fortnunately for you Hercules, it is your ability to think like a mortal that will keep you alive”

Eve waves her hand and the house of Alchemene resurrects itself from the ashes.

CHAPTER 2

Several years later…

“Iolaus..don’t leave..I’m afraid once it gets dark..I never know what the others want from me.”

Iolaus has a guilt stricken look. The last time Iolaus left Greece on a diplomatic mission to help Queen Cleopatra in Egypt, the Other Gods had taken advantage of Hercules vulnerable condition. Hercules had been severely beaten and was left for dead when he came back from Egypt. Iolaus knew his responsibility to keeping Hercules safe is greater than the greater well being of Greece. Eve killed the Gods that had molested and beaten Hercules, but the scar on Hercules soul was another thing altogether.

“Hercules, while I’m gone,  you will be safe on Olympus with Eve. She will protect from the other Gods..then I will be back..do not be afraid..” With that word, Iolaus zaps Hercules to Olympus…

Hercules appears on Olympus and is dizzy from being transported by the power of the Gods. Hercules remains on his knees afraid to say anything lest Eve might change her mind and decide to take his life after all. Eve notices Hercules silent and afraid kneeling on the floor..

“Ah, Hercules..welcome to the New Olympus..now that the world no longer have Olympian Gods..the world is now a more peaceful place to live now that all the mortals have become Gods..Iolaus was right to bring you here..there are still many who feel that you being the last Olympian..you are a welcome target to those who still want revenge against the selfish despotic Olympians..”

Hercules listened respectfully to Eve but always thinking “but I was only half Olympian..not a full God..and now I’m a full mortal..I wonder why everyone still hates me..Oh dear..I hope Eve didn’t read these thoughts..she might get mad at me..I can’t afford her ill will..Oh boy..”

Eve looks down into Hercules face. Hercules face is still facing the floor not daring to look Eve in the eye..Eve says “I can read your thoughts Hercules..be careful what you think..remember I killed all the other half God bastards of Zeus..but then again the other half God bastards deserved their deaths..they pestered mortals just as much as the full Gods..you, Hercules, were the exception…and that’s why you are alive..don’t think I can’t change my mind! Now get me a glass of ambrosia..”

Quickly Hercules sees the ambrosia jug on the nightstand and he pours Eve a drink and with hands trembling hands Eve her drink..in his mind Hercules thinks meek thoughts..respect..submission..obedience..hope that no one would hurt him..and this feeling of extreme vulnerability without Iolaus..his protector..how he misses Iolaus..”

Eve dismisses Hercules while all the other Gods laugh at Hercules..Hercules slinks out the door and into a nearby stable where Eve keeps the winged horses..seeing the straw..Hercules gladly rests on the straw thinking “Iolaus..please come back soon..I am afraid..I miss you Iolaus..you are my only friend…” Exhausted, Hercules falls asleep in the straw..clutching himself in a fetal ball, Hercules prays that he will not be hurt again…like the last time Iolaus had to leave briefly for a diplomatic mission.

Stacius, Hercules nemesis from his Academy days sits at Eve’s table “So, the mighty Hercules has been struck down and is sleeping like a terrified puppy in your stable..he is nothing without his powers..”

Eve gives Stacius a warning look “I gave Iolaus my word that Hercules will be protected from harm..I will not let you or the other Gods hurt Hercules the way you did last time..I have read Hercules’ mind and I have enough Gods on my side who think Hercules deserves to be left alone..he was the champion of mortals..his reward now is to be left alone..his mind is pure and clean..no thoughts of resentment or arrogance like the other Olympians..all I read in Hercules’ mind at the moment is fear and terror..and he prays every night that he will be treated with mercy..he doesn’t mind to be treated as an object of pity as long as he is safe..he really does not think like a God..or even a half God for that matter…”

Stacius gives Eve a respectful nod as he thinks I will find a way to sneak Hercules out of here and then once I have him under my control..Hercules will be my slave..it will be my pleasure to break Hercules’ spirit…his spirit is practically broken as it is…yes this will be fun…”

Xena zaps herself into Eve’s chambers with a worried look on her face “Eve, I don’t think we can protect Hercules much longer..Stacius has gathered enough Gods who want Hercules’ hide..they all hate Hercules just because he is the Son of Zeus..I’ve tried to persuade them of Hercules’ goodness but nobody believes me..they think that the world would be better off if ALL Olympians are dead..I have it on good authority that they intend to storm Olympus to get Hercules”

Gabrielle runs into Eve’s chambers totally out of breath “Xena, Eve..Stacius has taken Hercules..we’d better get Iolaus fast”

Hercules tossed and turned in the straw..he could hear the winged horses of Eve neighing one moment and then the next..Hercules could feel his skin tingle as he felt himself being transported somewhere else. Hercules opens his eyes and finds himself naked..suspended in air with his arms over his head and his legs spread-eagled in front of him. He sees Stacius and his friends laughing at his predicament. Terror runs through Hercules soul as his blood runs cold at the sight of seeing himself so helpless and vulnerable..

Stacius approaches the naked Hercules and strokes the hair on Hercules’ chest “So how does it feel to be mortal? Can’t use your divine strength to get you out of this one can you? Now look who’s boss..not the mighty Hercules..you humiliated me at the Academy..getting me thrown out..made me a disgrace in front of my family and friends..made me a laughing stock of Greece..now who’s the laughing stock now?”

Despite himself, Hercules is repulsed by Stacius’ touch so he withdraws his body as far as he can but the chains hold him in place..he thinks telepathically “Iolaus..I need your help..please..help me.I can’t hold on much longer..please hurry..they are hurting me..feel so powerless..Iolaus..I need you..

Tears run down Hercules’ face as he realizes how helpless he is..fear mounts in Hercules’ heart as he shivers as he listens to the coarse laughter and language of Stacius and his friends…

Hercules closes his eyes..he still cries but he makes no sound..until Stacius decides to pinch him..Hercules lets out a yell of pain..and then Hercules faints…as his world turns to the welcoming safety of oblivion…
