Soulmates
Disclaimer: The characters of Lois & Clark belong to Marvel Comics and Warner Brother Studios. The characters of Iolaus and Aphrodite belong to Renaissance Pictures. No money is being made from this story. This story is written for entertainment purposes only.
Summary: Aphrodite convinces Clark that Lois is his soulmate—the love of his heart—Iolaus makes a brief cameo—as he describes his soulmate story with Gabrielle (based on the Hercules episode “Prometheus” where Gabrielle tells Iolaus the “Soulmate story”)
Author’s Note: The idea that Lois and Clark are soulmates stems from the Soulmate Chronicles episode of Lois and Clark..except that in my story Lois and Clark are NOT cursed through time. In my rendition of “Soulmate Chronicles”, Lois and Clark have fallen in love from with each other from lifetime to lifetime and have married in each lifetime and in each case, Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love has been responsible for bringing Lois & Clark together with the help of “Sweetcheeks” Iolaus. This story refers to Unlikely Encounters (a story on my website)..it is better if you read Unlikely Encounter before reading Soulmates…
CHAPTER 1
Clark entered the Daily Planet building hoping to land the job of his life..the chance to become a reporter at the greatest newspaper on earth—The Daily Planet. After college, Clark had traveled to many parts of the world and worked at many different small newspapers, but now that Clark has had such vast international experience, he has decided to settle down and put down roots in Metropolis and apply for a job at the Daily Planet. In anticipation for his interview with Perry White, Clark had bought all his writing samples.
“Clark, have a seat. I see you speak many languages..your samples show that you have truly traveled and you adapt quickly to change. I see this article you did..you got an exclusive with Boris Yeltsin..not a bad coup for a neophyte..but boy have you done any investigative reporting?” Perry continues to leaf through Clark’s impressive pile of articles…
“Yes, Mr. White..I uncovered the conspiracy where a chemical company was illegally dumping chemicals into nearby lakes and rivers..and that these chemicals were causing the nearby residents to get sick, to get cancer and die at alarming rates..” Clark hands Perry White the article.
“I see you have REAL potential here, Kent.” Perry eyes Clark with approval in his eyes. Yes, this young man is very intelligent, exudes a certain confidence..I think I’ll partner him up with Lois Lane..those two will make a great team..Lois & Clark..I think I’ll hire Kent..”
Just then a beautiful brunette burst into Perry White’s office. The moment Clark lays his eyes on Lois, it’s love at first sight. Clark’s heart catches in his throat as he watches this beautiful brunette’s wild hand gestures as she tries desperately to tell Perry her latest scoop. Clark admires the passion, the fire and the enthusiasm that SHE displays.
Lois, on the other hand, completely ignores Clark as she talks to Perry about her latest story. Lois, or “Mad Dog Lane” as she is nicknamed around the office, has only one ambition, and that is to win the Pulitzer Prize..for she already has quite a collection of Kerth Awards, being Metropolis’ best investigative reporter..the star reporter at the Daily Planet.
“Perry, this story will make front page news..I have evidence linking this corrupt politician..(she shows Perry a photo) taking bribes and sleeping with underage girls and that my expose will blow the lid off this fool’s career..I also suspect that the bribes are linked to drug trafficking and Intergang and that somebody rich and powerful in Metropolis is involved as well..”
“You know Lois, I would love to publish this expose on the front page and put this scumbag away..but I need proof…” Perry holds onto to Lois before she storms out of his office in anger.
“Lois, I want you to meet Metropolis’ newest reporter. Lois Lane, I want to introduce you to Clark Kent, he is our newest hire.” Perry steps away as Lois reluctantly shakes hands with a shy Clark Kent.
“Nice to meet you Kent.” Lois makes a motion to leave Perry’s office.
“Oh and Lois, Kent will be your partner from now on.” Perry adds.
“But, Perry, I don’t need a partner. I work best alone” Lois complains. Lois thinks to herself besides I don’t want a novice to slow me down.
“You know, Perry this hick from nowheresville will only get in my way..” Lois adds.
“I’m sorry Lois, it’s either Kent or Ralph, take your pick.”
Lois takes one look at Ralph, a middle aged balding man who looks as if he’s had one beer too many judging by the way his stomach hangs out…Lois takes a second look at Clark and rationalizes..well at least Kent is good looking..cute butt.. Suddenly a voice inside Lois’ head rings out “Doesn’t he have the most bitching bod totally radical don’t you think? It’s not so bad to work next to a radical dude like Kent..with that sexy body..every day?..Lois shakes her head as she wonders where that voice came from..some ditzy valley girl wannabe..Lois hears a faint giggle as the voice fades..Lois continues to appraise Clark, Yes, Clark is damn cute..Sure why not? Kent sure beats Ralph…
Aphrodite giggles as she sees Lois eyeing Clark up and down. Iolaus who had accompanied Aphrodite on this outing partially as a favor to Hercules’ ditzy sister remarks “You know Aphrodite, I really don’t approve of you planting ideas in her head..”
“Oh Sweetcheeks..don’t worry..Lois Lane is destined to fall in love with Clark Kent..I mean Lois & Clark are soulmates..”
“Soulmates? Dite? Are you sure?”
“Like, no duh.. I’m the Goddess of Love aren’t I? I know the soulmate gig when I see it shortcakes--you know like you and Gabrielle!”
“Alright, Dite..you win!” Iolaus gives Aphrodite a mischevious grin. Both Aphrodite and Iolaus go back to watching the drama unfold between Lois & Clark, as Aphrodite and Iolaus are both invisible to mortal eyes.
Clark could feel the hair rising on the back of his neck as he senses Lois evaluating him and for some unknown reason this makes Clark feel as if he’s naked. Clark can feel his cheeks blushing right to his hairline. Suddenly, Clark hears a voice boom inside his head “No need to be ashamed dude, Lois thinks you’re gorgeous..and take it from me Sweetpea, you are as cute as a Greek God..oh and that blush makes you even cuter..(giggle)..” Clark looks around to see where the voice could be coming from and to his astonishment, Clark sees a scantily clad blonde giggling in front of him surrounded by pink sparkles ogling at him..Aphrodite winks at Clark and mouths the words “Lois loves you” and disappears in a sparkle of pink. Clark Kent blinks his eyes in amazement and scratches his head as he wonders who that beautiful scantily-clad pink blonde was and how she knows that Lois loves him. Luckily no one else but Clark notices Aphrodite’s visit.
Perry continues to introduce Clark to Lois “Clark Kent is from Smallsville. He will be your new partner. Right Lois?”
“Yes, Perry” Lois does not like the alternative of having to partner up with middle-aged Ralph so she gladly accepts the very handsome Clark Kent as her partner.
“A pleasure to meet you, Smallsville. Just get this straight, I’m the senior partner..you got that..you keep up with me! I don’t have the time to train a novice!” Mad Dog Lane walks out of Perry’s office with Clark in tow.
Perry shakes his head but he already knows that Lois has met her match in Clark Kent. That Clark Kent might be mild mannered but after 20 years in the journalistic business, Perry knows that there’s more to Kent than meets the eye. Perry knows that Clark will more than pull his own with Mad Dog Lane and he hopes maybe this new investigative team can bring in a few Kerths together in the future..Yes the names Lois & Clark has a certain ring to it..Perry smiles to himself at this thought..billboards of Lois & Clark plastered all over Metropolis and to think it’s all because of his intuition..for it was he Perry White who brought Lois & Clark together in the first place..Yes, there is a God..Perry thinks happily while munching on his latest cigar.
CHAPTER 2
That night when Clark comes home,he excitedly tells his mother about his first day at work…
“You know, Mom, I got the job at the Daily Planet!”
“Congratulations dear..are you going to fly home tonight to eat dinner with us?” Martha Kent asks.
“Oh yeah..not tonight Mom..how about tomorrow night..I’ve got to write up a story…I can’t let her down!”
“You can’t let WHO down dear?”
“Oh Mom, Perry White partnered me up with Lois Lane, the most beautiful reporter in the world” repeats Clark in a dreamy faraway voice.
Martha listens to her son’s faraway voice and knows instantly that Clark is in love as Clark continues to describe Lois Lane “Mom, Lois is feisty..independent..beautiful chocolate eyes..I think I’ve found my soulmate..the moment I saw Lois, I fell in love..”
Before Clark can continue his conversation with his mother, in pops Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love..
“That’s right pumpkin..Lois is definitely your soulmate..oh yeah..hi..my name is Aphrodite..I’m the Goddess of Love”
Clark stares at Aphrodite; his jaw drops wide open in surprise as he thinks that’s the same crazy lady that he saw at the office..
“Ah..Mom..ah..something’s come up..I’ll call you right back!” Clark hangs up the phone while still staring bug-eyed at the amazingly stunning Aphrodite.
Clark stutters in surprise “ah..you’re Aphrodite? As in the Greek goddess of Love?”
“Yep..I’m she..THE one and only..I’m here because YOU Clark Kent are in love with Lois!”
Clark begins to pace the room rapidly as he puts his hand through his hair as his mind whirls when a sudden memory comes back to him from his adolescence.
(16 years earlier..)
Jonathan Kent notices that Clark is no longer listening to him “ Clark are you alright?”
“Yes, Dad but I’ve just received a distress call. I’ll help you finish cleaning out the barn later. Clark rushes out in superspeed as he hears a telepathic call for help.
“Hercules..Hercules..help..I’m pinned down inside this car..my ribs hurt..please hurry..I can’t breathe..steering wheel cramming my chest..please pull me out of here..Herc..” Iolaus could feel his energy waning as he fights to stay conscious.
Clark arrives at the scene to see a blond-haired man obviously in great pain pinned inside a car. With no time to spare, Clark rips open the door and pries Iolaus from the car.
“Stay still..tell me your name”
“My name is Iolaus..wait..you’re not Hercules..How did you rip open that car door?”
“I’m Clark Kent..but you must promise me not to tell anyone what you just saw!”
“Not even Hercules?”
“No, no one must know about my superpowers..at least not yet!”
“Alright..it’s a deal..I won’t tell anyone..not even my best friend, Herc”
“You are bleeding badly..you might have internal injuries..I’d better fly you to the hospital”
“You can fly too? Herc can’t fly! I guess Herc isn’t the strongest man in the world anymore!”
Rescuing Iolaus from the pinned car, was the first rescue Clark Kent a 13 year old Kent had ever attempted. In the intervening years, Clark had gotten to know Iolaus very well. Iolaus and Clark would often jog together..
(On a recent jogging trip, Clark and Iolaus rehash old times)
“Iolaus I want to thank you for your friendship..and for not telling anyone of my secret identity..as Superman”
“You know Clark, it was very hard for me NOT to tell Hercules. Herc is my best friend..” Iolaus tilts his head to the side to look up at Clark..
“What did you tell Hercules about the car accident?”Clark asks.
“I told Herc that Superman ripped open the car door and that it was Superman who flew me to the hospital. Herc has no idea that your real name is Clark Kent..only YOU can tell him that secret when you are ready.” Iolaus responds.
“Iolaus, I also want to thank you for treating me like a normal human being. All I’ve ever wanted was to have a normal life..wife..children..job..I can’t have that if everyone knows I’m Superman…an alien from outer space..a freak show..”
“Clark, you are not a freak show..you are a normal human being..it is my honor to know you..actually I’m the one who owes you..that night when that drunk truck driver rammed my car..you risked your neck at being discovered..you saved my life” Iolaus stops jogging and gives Clark the traditional Greek warrior handshake.
As Clark’s head clears to the present, he realizes that he’s talking to Hercules’ sister. He recognizes the name “Aphrodite” from the many stories that Iolaus told him about his adventures with Hercules.
“Aphrodite..Iolaus has told me all about you..about Hercules..about ancient Greece..were you the one who told me that Lois loves me at the Daily Planet office today?”
“Yes, sweetpea..that was me..I’m sorry if I startled you..but you see..you and Lois are soulmates..I am here to make sure that you and Lois get together..if you know what I mean” Aphrodite giggles. Clark blushes as the meaning of her remark becomes apparent..
Aphrodite knows that nowadays mortals are just not accustomed to sseing her like they used to in Ancient Greece. “Hercola is my half brother. Zeus is our father. Iolaus is my best friend..he’s my Sweetcheeks..”
“You call Iolaus..Sweetcheeks?” Clark adds as his eyebrows arch at this remark.
“You and Sweetcheeks are remarkably handsome..such tight musculature..why a girl could spend all day running her fingers through your tight muscles and feeling your muscles ripple..ah you’re both so delicious!..I helped Iolaus find his soulmate and now I’m here to tell you that you are destined to be with Lois..she is your future..she’s your soulmate. You see, Sweetpea, you and Lois have been soulmates from lifetime to lifetime and in each lifetime Lois falls in love with you and marries you. And both you guys have the cutest kids..Just have patience, sweetpea..Aphrodite softly caresses Clark rock-solid chest as Aphrodite sighs with pleasure as her hands also discover Clark’s flat washboard stomach..” Aphrodite thinks that Clark’s body is as dreamy as Iolaus’…
Clark is beginning to feel a bit hot under the collar as the Goddess of Love is unknowingly turning him on. Clark tries to focus on Lois…
“Aphrodite..I love Lois..and I know you told me that in all the other lifetimes, Lois falls in love with me..but in THIS lifetime..that is not going to be possible..NOT this time..”
“Hey, I’m the Goddess of Love.. I know you and Lois are soulmates..it’s what I do..”
“I don’t think Lois can fall in love with me..I’m an alien..I’m not even human like I was in the other lifetimes.. How can Lois love a freak like me?”
“Sweetpea..you are as cute as a button..Lois would have to be blind and deaf to NOT fall in love with you! You are totally droolicious!”
Clark studies the floor as he continues “Lois won’t love an alien..I know because my previous girlfriend, Lana was totally repulsed by me..Lana said that all these superpowers frightened her..that I’m NOT normal..Lois will be afraid of me..and disgusted by my touch….I can’t ever tell her what I am..” Clark studies the floor as he confesses to Aphrodite.
Aprhodite stops massaging Clark’s droolicious chest as she is struck by the vulnerability and hurt in Clark’s eyes. In one of her rare serious moments, Aphrodite cups Clark’s chin to her eye level and in a comforting maternal voice, Aphrodite begins her tirade:
“Clark, do you know what “soulmate” means?”
Clark answers the question as if reciting from a lesson book “Soulmates..ah when the soul finds the other half that makes it complete..that’s a soulmate right?”
“That’s right..Lois is that other half of your soul..she will make you feel complete..Lois will love your soul..Clark..because it is your soul that will make her soul feel complete, so it doesn’t matter what planet you’re from..sweetums..Lois will love you anyway..trust me..I know the LOVE gig..I’ve been at it for centuries and I’ve never been wrong..”
“You mean my soul is the same even though I’m an alien from Krypton?”
“Don’t worry Clark..Lois’ going to love you and it won’t matter that you’re an alien..Lana didn’t love you because she didn’t know your soul..Lana’s a flake..she’s a superficial flake..forget about Lana…Lana was not your soulmate..it was not meant to be..concentrate on Lois..”
“You know Aphrodite, the minute I saw Lois..I felt an instant connection to her that I’ve never felt with anyone else..not even Lana..when Lois enters the room..my soul becomes connected to hers..a surge of electricity goes through my body it’s so overwhelming..this feeling that I have for Lois..I can’t describe..”
“Ah…Sweetchums..you felt the soulmate connection..oh this is so groovy!” Aphrodite claps her hands gleefully and shakes herself in excitement..Clark can’t help but noticing how Aphrodite’s body seems to shake in all the right places…
“Getting back to Lois..I know now that Lois is my missing half..I see, smell and think about Lois all the time..sometimes I even fantasize about Lois..” Clark caught himself in time as he was about to tell Aphrodite that he had fantasized Lois dressed in that scantily clad outfit that Aphrodite is always wearing…Aphrodite gives Clark a flirtatious smile as if she could read his mind. Clark once again finds himself embarrassed in front of the great Goddess of Love, Aphrodite.
“Don’t worry..Sweetpea..I don’t normally read mortal’s minds..but you are so cute..I know you love Lois if you’re thinking about Lois in my clothing..”Aphrodite giggles. A mirror materializes in front of Aphrodite as she looks at herself vainly and says “I am beautiful aren’t I? Even though Iolaus was in love with Gabrielle, I would sometimes catch Sweetcheeks staring at me..at my chest..especially if I jiggle it like this!” Aphrodite giggle sounds like the soft tinkle of sleigh bells to Clark’s ears. Like Iolaus, Clark cannot seem to draw his eyes away from Aphrodite’s goodies.
“Aphrodite gives Clark a comforting hug. She pulls Clark into her heaving chest and Clark feels his head swimming as he is tucked inside Aphrodite’s chest. Aphrodite’s perfume has a dizzying effect on poor Clark..and he fantasizes..will Lois ever touch me in this way..oh if she does..I’d be the happiest man on earth..Lois..clantily clad..wearing Jasmine perfume..if only she’ll love my soul..maybe Aphrodite is right..it’s my soul that matters..not my heritage..
“Sweetpea, I’ve been in the soulmate business..well..forever..and I’ve never been wrong about something like this. In every lifetime, Clark, I’ve been your guide and in every lifetime, Lois has married you. I’ve never steered you wrong..babe..I’m the Goddess of Love you know?” Aphrodite pouts as she considers it a grievous insult that Clark would doubt her abilities..
As if reading her thoughts, Clark reconsiders his next statement “Thank you for making me see the truth that someday Lois will love me…ME..Clark Kent..Oh no..what if Lois falls for Superman?”
“She won’t..in the end..Clark..she will fall for you..besides it wouldn’t be the first time that Lois is enamored with one of your disguises” Aphrodite giggles…
Clark gives Aphrodite an alarmed look “What do you mean..she falls for one of my disguises?”
“Well..in another life, you were Robin Hood..you stole from the rich and gave to the poor…Lois fell for your Robin Hood costume..you wore this mask and whenever you were giving food to the poor..Lois would help you..when Lois found out you were a Duke..she was totally surprised..she didn’t like royalty..it took her a while to have her fall in love with YOU..and not with the mythical hero..Robin Hood..but in the end when she realized that the Robin Hood gig was just a disguise and not who you really are..well she understood..and loved you anyway..later on..she grew to admire and respect you..and see you for the beautiful soul and pure heart that you have..the two of you always had a long-lasting marriage…give Lois time..” Aphrodite pleads..
“Thanks Aphrodite for everything..for giving me hope..when I thought there was none..I love you” Clark gives Aphrodite a sisterly hug.
“Sure thing Sweetpea..oh and remind me to tell you the soulmate story between Iolaus and Gabrielle..” Aphrodite makes a move to leave but Clark gently holds her hand and persuades Dite to stay just a little while longer.
“Please Aphrodite..tell me the story about Iolaus and Gabrielle..what happened?”
“Well..Xena and Hercules were trying to free Prometheus. Iolaus had been injured because with Prometheus chained up, all mortals had lost the ability to heal. Iolaus was injured and dying. Gabrielle was tending him..it was then that Gabrielle realized that she was in love with Iolaus and that Iolaus was her soulmate..in order to keep Iolaus from falling unconscious..she told Iolaus the soulmate story..about how all humans were once two-headed creatures with four legs..then one day a wrathful God split mankind in two..so that for eternity..the two halves of the creature must find each other again in order for that creature to be complete..the two halves of one soul..Gabrielle knew that Iolaus was the other half of her soul..but you see it took Iolaus YEARS to understand this..he kept seeing Gabrielle as a immature girl and himself as too old for her..Gabrielle had to be patient to bring Iolaus around to her thinking..”
“You mean it might take Lois YEARS to realize that I’m her soulmate?”
“Just ask Iolaus..every time he saw Gabrielle..he kept seeing a little girl..and he kept seeing himself as too old..”
“You mean just like the way Lois sees me as a hick..and I keep seeing myself as a freak?”
“That’s right, Sweetpea..if it can work between Iolaus and Gabrielle..oh and I had a hand in getting them together and in keeping Gabrielle’s spirits up..just like I am keeping your spirits up..if Iolaus and Gabrielle finally married..so will you and Lois..trust me..I know what I’m talking about..”
EPILOGUE
“So you’re saying that Gabrielle is like me..she knew instantly who her soulmate was..she felt an instant connection to Iolaus but she had the faith to wait for him..you’re telling me to be patient aren’t you?”
“You know sweetpea..the best person to talk to is Iolaus..he’s the Lois in this equation…he’ll tell you what it’s like to be dense..” With a flash of pink, Aphrodite makes Iolaus appear.
“Aphrodite..you can at least warn a guy before making me appear somewhere..”responds an annoyed Iolaus dripping wet with soap suds still in his wet blond locks and shaving cream on his chin with a purple towel wrapped around his waist.!
“I was in the middle of taking a shower it’s a good thing that I had the time to grab a towel..what’s so important that it couldn’t wait until morning?” Iolaus tries to shake the suds out of his blond curly locks and only manages to splash water and suds onto Aphrodite who squeaks and backs away from a wet and annoyed Iolaus. Iolaus begins to shiver as he cannot take his towel away from his waist to dry himself without compromising his dignity.
“I’m sorry about that Sweetcheeks..here let me help..you’re going to catch your death of cold if you don’t get dressed..you know Sweetcheecks..you do look cute like that.”
In an annoyed tone of voice Iolaus says “Dite..this isn’t funny..it’s the middle of winter..and I’m standing sopping wet in Clark’s living room..in nothing but my towel..this can’t get any more embarrassing!”
Aphrodite giggles as she sees the annoyed Iolaus turning beet red in front of Clark “Come on Dite..have a heart!”
Finally feeling sorry for Iolaus’ predicament, Aphrodite instantly makes the towel disappear..Dite stops a moment to admire Iolaus..and then Dite dresses Iolaus in blue satin practically transparent pajamas. Aphrodite pauses to admire her handiwork and admire the view..
Still annoyed at his lack of clothing Iolaus gives Dite an angry scowl in his blue cerulean eyes “Dite..a little bit more clothing..a bath robe or something..this is still embarrassing..” Reluctantly Dite tears herself from Iolaus’ view and grants Iolaus a satin blue bathrobe to match the satin blue pajamas he has on. Iolaus rolls his eyes as he doesn’t fancy the idea of being dressed in his pajamas and bathrobe in front of Clark but still Iolaus thinks..this is Aphrodite after all..Thank the Gods Herc isn’t here..I’d never hear the end of it.
Finally Aphrodite gets to the point of why she has brought Iolaus to Clark’s house. Aphrodite carefully explains Clark’s soulmate predicament. “ Clark’s been having love problems and I just wanted you to tell him about you and Gabby..you know that whole soulmate deal..you see I just told Clark that Lois is his soulmate and that it might take Lois a while to realize that Clark is her soulmate..maybe even years..you know like how long it took you to realize that Gabrielle was your soulmate..”Aphrodite gestures to Clark who is wearing a woeful expression on his face as Clark contemplates the hopelessness of his situation..the idea that Lois will never love him..soulmates or not..because he is an alien from Krypton…
“Hello, Clark..nice to see you again..although I never thought I would see you in my blue pajamas” Iolaus blushes..and then gives Clark a warrior handshake.
“Ah sweetcheeks..blue is your color..the blue pajamas matches your eyes..” Aphrodite purrs in Iolaus’ direction..
Thoroughly embarrassed Iolaus turns to Aphrodite and says “Really, Dite, not in front of Clark..I mean..”
“Alright, Sweetcheeks..so tell us about Gabrielle..” Aphrodite sits beside Iolaus on the pink sofa next to Clark.
“Let me see, where should I begin? Oh yeah..Prometheus..Gabby told me the soulmate story while I was injured on Vulcan mountain..Xena and Herc were trying to rescue Prometheus..this huge Titan..anyway I was injured..Gabby was so damn young and innocent…I loved her right away but I was afraid to tell her..It took me a while to realize that Gabby was my soulmate..”
“Tell Clark how long before you married Gabrielle, Sweetcheeks?”
“It took at least 5 years before I married Gabrielle. I mean I was at least 10 years older than Gabrielle. Gabs was my friend..She deserved someone much younger..someone closer to her age..not an old man like me..besides she had her life with Xena and I had my life with Hercules..Gabs was really patient..she waited until I was ready to marry..she really loved me..”
Aphrodite turns to Clark “Do you believe me now? Lois will come around..just be patient the way Gabby was..with Iolaus..Some people can be so dense!”
“Aphrodite, I’m not dense! I was just trying to be sensible! Yeah, eventually I realized that the reason Gabrielle told me that soulmate story on Vulcan Mountain..was that she was trying to tell me that I was her soulmate..”
Clark gives Aphrodite an apologetic look “I’m sorry Dite for doubting you..you are right as always when it comes to love..I’ll wait for Lois as long as it takes until she realizes that we are soulmates and that we are destined to be together..”
“That’s a boy, Clark!
