Summary: Lois finds out something important about Clark Kent.

CHAPTER 1

Clark grimaces as he hears dispatch announcing a four car pileup on highway 35 and that there are many injuries. “Listen Lois I have to leave..huh to return a video..I’m sorry Lois..” Lois looks at the recently vacated seat left by Clark Kent.

Lois looks at her unfinished food. They had chosen a secluded Japanese restaurant with the best sushi in town. Clark had highly recommended this place to her. The sushi looked delicious. The raw fish each wrapped in its own layer of rice dipped in some kind of teriyaki or soy sauce. Lois even sipped the green tea.

Lois never thought she would like to eat raw fish but Clark had charmed his way into her heart and nowadays she would eat whatever he likes to eat even raw fish. Lois feels all alone as she finishes the sushi they had ordered together by herself. The waiter walks by and asks whether her partner will be back and Lois sadly shakes her head.

Why did Clark always have to leave in the middle of a meal? in the middle of a conversation? Clark always leaves when they are in the middle of doing something important. Like this lunch date, Lois had looked forward all week to this date. Clark had ordered special so that they would have this table to themselves and now Clark leaves with  no explanation. Oh yeah except for that flimsy excuse of returning that stupid library book again. No wait..it’s to return that stupid video again.

Why can’t Clark return the book or video at another time? She hates these excuses that Clark gives for leaving her in the middle of a date. The other patrons in the restaurant are now giving her pity looks as they realize that Clark isn’t coming back anytime soon and now they all think that she has been stood up and left to finish her meal alone. Talking to herself while eating in a public place didn’t help her image either.

No, Clark is up to something. All his excuses were getting more and more pathetic. Just yesterday Clark left abruptly in the middle of a conversation about an important story to check to see if he had left his oven on. The flimsiest excuse of course was when he said he had forgotten to brush his teeth and he didn’t want to have bad breath for an important interview he was to have later that day. Well why didn’t Clark just bring his toothbrush to work like everybody else. No, Clark has a secret and it’s up to Mad Dog Lane to dig it out.

The waitress brings the food bill. Lois looks at the food bill sarcastically. Gee whiz..some date. I have to pay the bill for Clark’s date for a restaurant that Clark recommended for food that Clark loves to eat for a date that Clark invited me too and for a date that Clark is supposed to pay for. Lois promptly pays the bill and leaves the restaurant without a backward glance.

Now to get to the bottom of Clark’s secret. First Lois takes out her cellphone and calls Perry to tell him that she will be meeting a source and won’t be back to the newsroom until the next morning. Next, Lois takes a taxicab and heads straight for Clark’s apartment on Clinton Avenue. Lois makes sure that there is nobody home. No lights are on. She knocks lightly on the door and nobody answers the door. Good. Now she can get to work. Lois lifts the doormat and takes out the door key that Clark keeps under the mat to open his door.

She now enters Clark’s private domain. The apartment permeates with the essence of Clark. On the bookshelf are books in all different languages: Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French just to name a few. On the mantle are proudly displayed Clark’s football trophies from Princeton; his one Kerth award; photos of Martha and Jonathan Kent; photos of Martha hugging her son; photo of Jonathan Kent and a much younger Clark holding a large fish they had just caught; and the photo taken the night Lois and Clark won their first Kerth together. Lois is smiling adoringly up at Clark who was wearing that dashing tuxedo.

Lois feels thirsty and decides to grab herself a drink. She opens Clark’s refrigerator and to her surprise finds that it is well stocked. Cokes; Pepsi’s; hoho’s; ding dongs; a half eaten apple pie; a tuna casserole; milk; orange juice the works. It’s like looking at the frozen section of the grocery store. No wonder Clark is such a great cook—he keeps his place well stocked. Lois grabs a coke out of the fridge and looks at the rest of Clark’s apartment trying to pierce the secret that is Clark Kent.

Lois spies Clark’s computer at the far end of his living room tucked in a small corner by his bedroom door. Lois always the intrepid nosy reporter boots up Clark’s computer to see if he left any crumbs of his secret in his files. Clark’s computer requires a password. Okay. What would Clark use as a password? Lois tries all kinds of words. Then she smiles as realization dawns. Of course, Clark loves his mother very much..the password must be Martha. Lois types in Martha in the password dialogue box and sure enough the computer gives her open access to all of Clark’s files.

Lois looks at the wide array of Clark’s files: taxes—nope, not interesting, Planet stories—nope she was not interested in scooping Clark, diary—jackpot! Clark opens the “diary” file and begins reading.

January 15th

Dear Diary,

I can’t believe what happened to me today. I set fire to the barn. I was angry at Lana because she likes Pete Ross and she won’t even look at me. She only has eyes for the school’s quarterback and he’s not even that good looking. Why am I always invisible to her? I go out of my way to be nice to her and she doesn’t even see me. I must be the only fifteen year old who has never gone on a date. Anyway I was just looking at the barn and suddenly these red beams of light come shooting out of my eyes and the next thing I know the barn is on fire and my Dad is taking the hose to water down the fire. I just stand there dumbfounded. Am I a danger to society? These new powers I’m getting will I hurt someone? I am so confused.

Dear Diary,

I think I also have superhearing too. I can hear Mr. Ihrig snore and he’s miles away. I can hear Mr. Batson and Mrs Batson arguing about how much Mrs Batson spends on her wardrobe and that’s clear across town. Right now my mother is muttering something about cooking beef stew or pork stew for dinner tonight and she’s downstairs in the kitchen. Dad just said “Ow” because he just stubbed his finger on a nail and he’s in the barn. Yep, another weirdo power that I have. I just wish I knew why I’m the only one with these powers. Is there anyone else out there like me? Who were my adoptive parents? What were they like? Or is it just me? Is that why they left me? Because I’m a freak?

March 3

Dear Diary,

I am able to run as fast as the train. I sure do burn out my shoes all the time. Luckily mother is on good terms with the shoemaker or fixes my sneakers. The noon train was coming and I left school early and I ran as fast as the noon train. I even slowed slightly so that I can see the people in the train but I ran fast enough so that they could not see me. Sometimes having these powers can be lots of fun!

May 28,

Dear Diary,

Today is my 18th birthday. I graduate high school in a few weeks. Pete Ross and Lana are still going out together. It’s been three years to this date. They’ve been dating since I was fifteen. Pete told me the other day that he intends to propose to Lana when she turns 18 in a few months. They look so good together. Pete and Lana love each other very much. I sometimes wonder if I will ever find someone to love me like that.

I doubt it. I’m just too weird with all these powers that nobody else has. I can see through walls; run as fast as a train; catch bullets with my bare hands; and yesterday I discovered that I could fly. Dad was on the roof fixing a leak when he slipped and almost fell, instantly I grabbed him and then I flew him down to the ground. No it was more like I hovered to the ground. I’ve tried experimenting with my flying ability and it is the neatest gift. I can soar so high into the heavens that I feel I can touch the moon or the sun. It seems the closer I fly to the sun, the more energy I have. I honestly think that the sun somehow energizes my body. My folks call my abilities gifts.  I don’t.

I just want to be like everyone else. I want to have a “Lana” in my life someday. But what woman in her right mind will want to marry a freak like me? That’s what I am, a freak!  Why can’t I just be like everybody else?

December 24th of Clark’s 18th year

Dear Diary,

It seems that my 18th birthday has been an eventful year. The two most significant events were: I learned I can fly and I learned I’m an alien. Well at least that explains all these freaky powers that I have. The globe that I found inside my spaceship glowed one night and just told me that my home planet is Krpyton and that my real name is Kal-El. I held the glowing globe in my hands and a warm shaft of light went through my body and it transmitted its thoughts into my mind telepathetically I guess. Well I guess I’m an alien alright. An alien that definitely no Earth woman will ever love. I am a Krptonian and I’m the only one left. I guess I’ll just have to get used to the idea of being alone for the rest of my life…

Clark’s first day at the Daily Planet

Dear Diary,

I’ve traveled the world these past 5 years since graduating from college but nothing compares to the hustle and bustle of Metropolis. I went to the interview at the Daily Planet for the reporter job. Perry White is a very abrupt but good editor. I think I’ll get the job although he wasn’t too impressed with my article on the African Gekko.

Then the most beautiful woman came into Mr. White’s office. She was a whirlwind. Her brown hair. Her gorgeous legs. Her sensuous voice. Her sexy body. I know she’s the one for me. The moment she entered the office I knew that I was in love with Lois Lane.

Clark’s first few months at the Daily Planet

Dear Diary,

It’s such fun to be partnered with Lois Lane. She has fire..and she is everything I want a woman to be. She’s funny..she’s independent..she’s..I  just can’t put into words how much she uplifts my soul..I know I can’t live without her. Yet she doesn’t even notice me. She’s in love with Superman. Superman, a fictional character I came up with so that I can use my powers to help people without people figuring out I’m Clark Kent..Just like Lana, she treats me like I’m invisible. She’s not only in love with Superman but she’s also got a thing for Lex Luthor. I’m just the dumb alien from nowheresville..I know she can never love me..since I’m not even from Earth..just a freak in a red cape..who am I kidding.. I sometimes wonder..what color underwear does Lois wear?..

Lois is stunned. It’s as if her world has been turned upside down especially with the realization that Clark Kent is Superman. Of course why didn’t she realize this before? How could a pair of glasses hide her from the truth? Clark Kent is Superman. So that’s why he’s been running away from me. He’s been responding to emergencies by using his superhearing. Here is Lois Lane, with three Kerths under her belt and she was fooled by a pair of glasses. What is she galactically stupid?

Lois reread parts of Clark’s diary and the same phrase echoes itself throughout “I am just an alien..no Earth woman..nobody will ever want to love me..I’m just a freak and that’s all I am..I will always be alone. Tears run down Lois’ cheeks as she pictured a lonely teenager and then a lonely man isolated from the world with no one but his parents to love him. In all her wildest dreams, Lois never once considered Superman to be a lonely person..let alone a lonely teenager. What was it like for Clark to discover his powers and discover that he’s not like everybody else? And she, Lois Lane treating him like nobody and then worshipping the ground that Superman walks on. Lois whispered to the computer “But Clark..I know I could love you..I don’t care if you’re an alien..you’re the most decent..most compassionate..the kindest man I’ve ever met and you’re more human than that creep Claude..”

I don’t care if you are Superman. I don’t care that you come from another planet. To me, you are not a freak. You are the best partner I’ve ever had. Well at least this explains how you’re able to get all those exclusive interviews with Superman. You’re simply talking to yourself! Lois chuckles at that thought. Still Clark, how could you not confide in me? Don’t you trust me? I thought we were best friends. A brief surge of anger and betrayal raged through Lois’ veins until Lois remembered the hauntingly lonely passages in Clark’s diary as well as the most important passage of all.

Clark loves me. He’s fell in love with me the moment he saw me. I’ve tried him like so much dirt and then I ramble on and on about Superman. I don’t know what he sees in me. He must think I’m the most shallow woman he’s ever met and yet he still loves me. I yell at him for every mistake he makes. And yet he still loves me. I treat him like he’s nobody and yet he still loves me. I make fun of the fact that he’s from Kansas and yet he still loves me. Darn it Farmboy how can you still love me after all that?

I just know that I have to show you Clark, that you, an alien from Krypton, can be loved by an Earth woman and that Earth woman will be none other than Mad Dog Lane. I’ll find a way to convince you that you are the most handsome man on this Earth. You will never be alone again. Tears once again mist Lois’ eyes as she realized that she too was in love with the farmboy from Kansas who happens to masquerade as Superman.

Superman is just a mask you wear in public farmboy and now that I’ve read your innermost thoughts I know that underneath that flowing red cape beats the heart and soul of a shy insecure farmboy from Smallville. And it’s that farmboy that I love, not Superman. And I will spend all my waking moments trying to convince you of that fact. I love the sensitive heart that beats underneath that red cape, not the icon that everyone else puts on a pedestal. It must not be easy being you Clark and I’m sorry that I haven’t made it any easier for you.

I know I should be feeling guilty for reading your diary without your permission but I wouldn’t be such a good reporter if I didn’t snoop around in other people’s papers after all that’s where all the dirt is and in your case that’s where your soul is. Your diary is where you bare your soul and I hope someday you’ll be able to bare your soul to me, face to face and I will bare mine to you, all of it. I will tell you how much I love you and how much I can’t bear to live without you. Yep, I’m on a mission..to capture the heart of the one who has captured my soul.

CHAPTER 2

Clark gets back from the 4 car pileup. He is tired and dirty. He has been going to accident after accident for 12 straight hours and it is now one oclock in the morning and he’s exhausted. Clark spins out of his dirty suit and throws it into the washer. He then runs into the shower to get the dirt and grime off his body. He showers and spins into his favorite black boxers and grabs a ding dong cupcake out of his fridge. Clark sits down on his sofa and relaxes eating several boxes of ding dongs.

Sometimes it pays to be superhuman. I don’t have to worry about calories or about what foods I eat since technically I really don’t need foods to keep up my energy. Ijust need to get enough sunlight to reenergize my body. To that effect, Clark turns on his favorite sunlamp and sits down at the computer to LAN his article to Perry.

Clark notices the scent of Lois in the air. Strangely enough Lois’ scent is much stronger as Clark nears his computer. That’s strange I can smell Lois’ scent so strongly as if she’s been in my apartment at my computer. Nah..that’s not possible. Clark closes his eyes to concentrate on Lois’ heartbeat and finds a slow steady heartbeat followed by slow steady breathing. Ah..Lois is asleep right now safe and sound in her own bed. Where else would Lois be at this hour of the night..

Clark boots up his computer and writes the article about all the accidents he has been to. He then gives Perry a couple of Superman quotes to spice up his article. It no longer felt strange for Clark to be quoting himself when he writes his articles about Superman. In fact Clark has gotten quite accustomed to his two identities. After all being Superman enables Clark to use his abilities in full view of the public instead of having to hide his abilities as Clark Kent and risk being exposed as an alien.

Clark opens his diary file to write his latest entry. As usual, Clark focuses all his energy on winning Lois Lane’s heart. He breathes in the scent of Lois still lingering in his apartment. I guess I think of her all the time that I imagine smelling her here at my computer.

Dear Diary,

I was having the time of my life with Lois today. I think she really likes me. She smiles when I talk to her and she no longer calls me “the hack from nowheresville”. We work really great together. We call each other all the time to talk about everything. She confides in me every time something is wrong or even when nothing is wrong we just hang out together. Her eyes sparkle when she smiles and she’s been smiling a lot at me lately. Actually, she’s been really nice to me lately. I am so in love with her and I hope someday she can learn to love an alien, like me.

Dear Diary,

Lois got my coffee today. I couldn’t believe it. She knows I like my coffee light with a lot of cream and sugar and this morning she not only got my coffee as I liked it, she leaned over my computer and massaged my muscles claiming that I must really be stiff. Lois seems different somehow but I can’t put my finger on it exactly. When I tried to apologize to her for leaving her midway during lunch the other day, she didn’t look angry at all. She just massaged my muscles some more. I don’t understand why she’s not angry I mean she’s always angry at me. Something is going on with Lois and I intend to find out what.

Dear Diary,

We were talking about the latest story and Lois was going into one of her long tirades about how we can catch this corrupt politician in the act when I suddenly heard a bank alarm go off. When I made a vague excuse and took off, Lois actually laughed. When I came back to the newsroom several hours later, Lois left a rose on my desk and invited me to her apartment. I just don’t understand Lois at all. I mean we were in the middle of a really big story and I left to answer an emergency and she was not the least bit fazed. I just don’t know what to make of it at all. It’s as if she knows I’m Superman..nah..that just can’t be because I haven’t told her..could she have found out? But how?

I’d better dress nicely. Which suit should I wear? Let’s  see the charcoal..no the blue suit..Okay I won’t wear a suit after all it’s just a pizza and a Mel Gibson video at Lois’ tonight like usual. Why am I so nervous? I mean I’ve spent plenty of fun nights at Lois’ watching videos and playing Trivial Pursuit. What makes today so special? Okay maybe it’s that mysterious rose she left on my desk this afternoon. What does that rose mean? And doesn’t Lois know that that perfume she was wearing today just drives me crazy? Isn’t that the same perfume she wore the day she was under the influence of that pheromone spray? Okay, I’ll just go casual. Clark finally superspins into a black T shirt with the Smallville High School lettering on top of it and an overshirt with Smallville University lettering on top and a pair of worn Levis jeans.

Clark looked at his watch and flew over to Lois’ apartment so that he would not be late. Clark knew how much Lois hated it when he was late. He stopped by the video store to pick up Lois’ favorite Mel Gibson movie and then flew to Italy to pick up Lois’ favorite cheese pizza from Naples. Clark arrived at Lois’ doorstep with a pizza in one hand and a video in another. It was eight oclock sharp. Clark knocked on Lois’ door and Lois opened it right away.

“Clark..come right in! Put the pizza on the dining room table. And stick the video into the machine. “

Lois takes a good look at Clark. She still could not believe that he was Superman. That her partner was Superman. Or that Clark was once an awkward adolescent who resigned himself to living alone because he once felt that no woman could ever love him because he was an alien.  Lois was going to change his mind forever.

Clark fidgeted and wondered why Lois was staring at him as if he were a bug on display in a scientist’s lab. Lois did not act the least bit angry for him having left her earlier today in the middle of her speech. Why is Lois acting so nice to me? What’s going on? A puzzled frown formed on Clark’s forehead as he scratched his head to figure out the conundrum known as Lois Lane, a woman known for her fiery temper and extreme impatience if things did not go her way.

“Lois..I went to the video store and got your favorite Mel Gibson video..you know this was the last one..ever since Lethal Weapon 6 came out all the Lethal Weapons have been sold out..I went to five video stores before I was able to get this one last copy!” explains Clark as he waves the video under Lois’ nose.

Lois continues to stare at Clark as she still is wrapping her mind around the idea that her boyfriend is Supermn and that she loves Clark not her Superman fantasy. She realizes she doesn’t have to give up her Superman fantasy at all because she’s got the two for one special..both of the men she loves in one cute sexy package..Clark Jerome Kent and how cute he looks babbling on and on about that dumb video as if she cared a fig for it. Lois sweeps her eyes over Clark’s handsome muscular body and she has to stop herself from getting too hot under the collar.

Clark notices Lois increased heartbeat and increased body temperature and he worries that Lois might be coming down with a bug. Still Lois looks so beautiful in her oversized sweatshirt and he has to calm himself before he got too aroused. Clark closes his eyes and starts to recite the periodic tables backwards.

Lois and Clark spend a pleasant evening together. Eating pizza. Watching videos. Exchanging jokes. Eating nachos. Laughing together and just having a good time like they always do. Yet underneath it all, Clark senses something different about Lois. It seems as if she’s much more comfortable with him than before. Clark’s hopes rises as he thinks that maybe he and Lois may have more than just a friendship that they could actually advance their relationship to the next level.

“Did you see how Mel Gibson beat the bad guys..and he’s so funny!”

“I also noticed Lois that Mel Gibson also always gets the girl at the end kind of like a James Bond movie”

“You know, Clark..the good guys always gets the girl..”

Lois shyly moves closer to Clark. “ And you, Clark Kent is one of the good guys..” Lois continues to move closer to Clark until she is practically sitting in his lap. Lois takes Clark’s mouth in her hand as she cups his face and they start kissing passionately. At first Clark is startled by Lois’ boldness for usually it is he who takes the initiative but tonight it seems Mad Dog Lane is on the loose. Lois boldly takes Clark’s face in her hands and her tongue explores the inner recesses of Clark’s mouth. Like a starving man in a desert, Clark responds to her caresses and pretty soon both of them are breathing hot and heavy.

Lois takes Clark’s glasses off and she takes a good look at his handsome yet worried face. “So Clark, tell me what color underwear am I wearing?”

Clark rubs his eyes for a moment. “ But Lois you still have your clothes on? How should I know..?

“Oh Clark don’t be coy with me..just look harder..I know you can..”

“Lois what are you talking about..look harder..I..” Suddenly it hit Clark like a thunderbolt. Lois knew.

“You know?”

“Oh yeah..Clark..and I love you..not Superman..and I’ll prove it to you..”
