SACO—Jason Merrill of Dayton Sand and Gravel worked through a rough first inning in which he gave up four runs to Wormwoods, and settled into a grove that saw him strike out only two Worms hitters, but induced nine infield ground outs and seven fly ball outs at Thornton Academy's Varsity field Saturday. The game, which began a half our earlier than originally scheduled to accommodate three Wormwoods players and one from Dayton Sand and Gravel who were playing in the Thornton Academy-Deering playoff game at Hadlock field in the afternoon, was crisply played and pitchers on both sides worked hard to keep runners off base.
Nick Dyer started for the Worms and held the opponents in check through the first three innings. Dyer retired the side in the first on eleven pitches, yielded only one hit in the second, while striking out two and retired the side in order in the third on only twelve pitches.
DSAG, however was patient and in the fourth inning they erupted for seven runs aided by three errors and sent twelve batters to the plate.
Merrill walked to open the wild fourth inning and after a strike out, Brandon Laroche singled, took second on an error by the second baseman, and scored on Ben Haley's single. Matt Meader's base hit moved Haley into scoring position and Fearon walked to load the bases. Pat Kerry reached on an infield error at third and John Trembly's single plated two. Merrill singled and Tom Danylik doubled to cap the scoring for DSAG.
They added single insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings and when Merrill retired the heart of the Worms lineup in order in the seventh, DSAG had its first win of the season.
Dyer pitched well early but faced eleven batters in the top of the fourth before first baseman Parker Mooney was called to the mound. Mooney, pitching for the first time this season, got Brandon Laroche to pop up to shortstop to end the inning. But the damage was done. Wormwoods, which picked up its fifth run in the bottom of the third on two singles (Keil Martin and Mooney) and an infield out by Jordan Scully, was set down quickly by Merrill. The DSAG pitcher retired seven Worms in a row before giving up back-to-back singles again to Martin and Mooney. Martin scored on Mooney's hit.
Merrill then closed the book on the Worms with only two batters reaching base passed the fifth inning. Matt Grenier walked and was moved to second by Jeff Lamontagne's sharp single up the middle.
Merrill struck out three in his seven innings, walked only two and scattered nine hits.
Dyer fanned four, walked three and yielded eight hits. Mooney, in three in one-third innings, K'd seven of the ten batters he faced, walking only one and allowed only three hits.
Trembly had two singles for DSAG, as did Merrill and Ben Haley. Matt Meader and Brian Goulet collected singles as well.
Mooney had three singles at the plate, Martin had two and Justin McGhee led off the game with a base hit. Ryan Gauthier and Jeff Lamontagne also hit for the Worms.

![]() Jason Merrill of Dayton Sand & Gravel gave up four first inning runs but kept his composure and outlasted Wormwoods at the TA Varsity field Saturday, June 9. Merrill struck out only three, but his team committed only one error and kept the Worms off the base paths for most of the game. Dayton Sand & Gravel improved to 1-1, while Wormwoods dropped to 2-1.

BIDDEFORD—Bob's Auto fell to 0-3 on the season Friday evening, having lost its third game of the week, each by one run scored by the home team in the bottom of the seventh inning.
On Monday, Derek Benavides faced three batters in the bottom of the seventh inning against Wormwoods, only to have Justin McGhee driven home by Keil Martin's fielder's choice to short. On Wednesday, at St. Louis Field in Biddeford, Shawn Compson struck out 12, but Bob's Auto could only muster two hits off of Ocean Communities pitching and when OC scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the seventh, Bob's Auto could only wonder, "what if."
Friday night, playing their second game in a row at St. Louis Field, St. Louis scored a run on a wild throw to first base to allow the game winning run to scamper home from second base with the win.
Benavides, pitching in his second game of the week, started for Bob's Auto and when he threw what appeared to be a two-out third strike to a OC hitter, it appeared that he had worked his way out of a first and third jam. The pitch, however, was called a ball, and three runs scored subsequently, to tie the game at four.
Tough breaks abound for Bob's Auto, and in each game they have played good enough to win.
Anthony Barone took over for Benavides in the fifth inning and suffered the loss.

Bob's Auto's Derek Benavides poses with the team mascot, Bob, following the June 8 game vs. St. Louis at St. Louis field. Benavides pitched well enough to get the win, coming only one strike away from holding St. Louis to one run. On a close call by the home plate umpire, a Biddeford batter caught a break and extended his at bat, and subsequently three runs scored.

SACO—Justin McGhee of Wormwoods worked out of a first inning jam, allowing four hits and two runs, and then stymied St. Louis of the Biddeford Senior Little League the rest of the way on just one hit.
After Scott Labbe led off the game with a single, followed by Kyle Fecteau's single, McGhee induced Adam Perro into a groundout which moved the runners into scoring position. Raymond Prouly singled to center to plate two. When Matt Benson singled to right field, the throw to the infield was relayed by Jordan Scully who threw a perfect strike to Matt Grenier at home to catch Prouly for the second out of the inning. Jon Goudbout struck out looking to end the threat.
Wormwoods tallied two of their own with two outs in the first inning when Keil Martin and Parker Mooney singled and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Chris Gregoricus doubled to drive in two, but was picked off second by St. Louis pitcher, Adam Perro to end the inning.
McGhee struck out the side in the second and set St. Louis down in order in the third.
Nick Dyer of Wormwoods led off the bottom of the second being hit by a pitch. He stole second base and moved to third on Scully's infield out. Dyer scored on a passed ball before Normand Audie grounded out to finish the frame.
Matt Benson walked to start the fourth inning for St. Louis and moved around to third on McGhee's walks of two hitters. John Breard scored Benson on a fielder's choice to second base. Labbe popped out to third for the final out.
Mooney led off the Worm half of the fourth with a double to the left field fence and Jeff Christenbury walked. Dyer was hit by a pitch for the second time. Grenier drove in a run with an infield out and Ryan Moody walked to reload the bases. McGhee plated a couple of runs with a hard single up the middle. Josh Lindquist plated a run on an infield out. Chris Perham's infield out ended the scoring.
Kyle Fecteau led off the fifth for St. Louis with a hit and moved to second on an infield error. He took third on a passed ball and when a McGhee curve went only 59 feet and bounced off the front of the plate, Fecteau scored the final run for St. Louis.
Wormwoods was sent down in order in the fifth, but in the sixth inning the Saco team tallied four more runs to put the game out of reach. Dyer walked and stole second. He moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Scully's single to right. Scully stole second with a head first slide and took third on a passed ball. He was plated by McGhee's bloop single off the bat handle. Perham's hit scored McGhee and Perham was advanced around the diamond with a base on balls and a couple of infield errors.
Perro started the game for St. Louis and pitched 3 1/3 innings, striking out none and allowing seven runs. Benson pitched 2 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing four runs.
McGhee surrendered five hits and struck out seven, mixing his fastball and catching hitters off-guard with his curve.
The Worms had six hits, including two from McGhee and one each by Perham, Mooney (double), Scully and Gregoricus (double).
The Worms are now 2-0 on the young season.

SACO—Visiting PrimeCare ran its record to 2-0 with a 12-5 victory over Form Tech
at the TA JV Field on June 6.
Jeff Petit, with his unorthodox side-arm pitching style threw five strong
innings in relief for PrimeCare, allowing only one run and scattering five
hits. Mitchell Turgeon started for the PrimeCare, allowing four earned runs
in two innings. While Form Tech could only muster two hits off of Turgeon,
they were patient at the plate and took six base on balls.
Adam Prescott pitched for Form Tech and allowed eight runs, only one of
which was earned. Prescott pitched well, but did walk two and yielded an RBI
single to Devin Hilton. Travis Adams also had a hit in the first for
PrimeCare.
Prescott was the victim of shoddy fielding, as PrimeCare tallied seven
unearned runs in the opening frame.
In his four innings of work Prescott struck out five, walked two, and
yielded four hits. Charlie Biasin finished for Form Tech, allowing four runs
on four hits. He struck out one and walked two.
PrimeCare took full advantage of an eight run first inning and never
really looked back, although Form Tech managed to stay in the game, clawing
back run by run, they just ran out of innings and daylight enough to catch
PrimeCare.
Peter Mohlin scored Form Tech's first run, walking to lead off the
inning. He advanced on a walk to Ryan Danley, took third on a single by Bob
Smart and was plated by Prescott's fielder's choice.
In the second inning Form Tech scratched for another three runs on four
walks, two wild pitches and an RBI single by Smart. In the bottom of the
fifth inning the two Jakes, Smiley and Scott, combined for a run when Smiley
doubled and scored on Scott's single. That ended the scoring for Form Tech.
PrimeCare cruised to the win with an insurance run in the fourth. Nick
Anagnostis singled and took second on a fielder's choice and was plated by
Brian Morrison's single. In the fifth inning Nick Laskey singled, advanced
to second on a passed ball and moved to third on Brian Andrews' fielder's
choice to the right side of the field. He scored on Travis Adams' single.
PrimeCare picked up the final two runs in the top of the seventh on walks,
wild pitches and Devin Hilton's RBI single. PrimeCare may have had more but
a great play on the throw from right fielder Richard McCallum to first
baseman Smiley who nailed the runner with a strike to catcher Smart ended
the scoring for the contest.
Three PrimeCare batters collected two hits in the game; Adams, Hilton and
Morrison. Anagnostis and Laskey each had singles as well.

Wormwoods' Chris Gregoricus flexes his muscles, swinging what appears to be a rubber bat prior to Monday night's game with Bob's Auto. While some rules in Senior Little League have changed this year, the bat of choice is still aluminum. Gregoricus and his mates rallied from a first inning three-run deficit to defeat Bob's Auto, 7-6 in Senior Division action at the Thornton Academy Varsity Field Monday evening.

SACO—After what seems to have been an eternity, the Saco Senior Little League kicked off its season with openers in both the Senior and Junior Divisions on June 4, three days after the scheduled start of the season.
Having suffered through first a postponement due to a Thornton Academy playoff game on Friday, and then torrential downpours all weekend long, the first two games of the season finally took place at Thornton Academy's Varsity and JV fields.
In the Senior Division Bob's Auto faced Wormwoods on the Varsity Field at Thornton Academy. Both teams have 2001 season TA Junior Varsity players who have been called up to the Varsity team for the playoffs, but because this game fell on an off day during the playoffs, each team had its ace on the mound for the first game.

June 4, 2001
Wormwoods started sophomore ace, Chris Perham while Bob's Auto countered with JV pitcher, Anthony Barone.
Perham gave up three runs in the first inning, two of them unearned. Tom Madden reached on an error with one out, Derek Benevides walked and Madden scored on Anthony Barone's single. Benevides and Barone scored on Sean Compson's base hit.
Wormwoods scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning when Justin McGhee bunted Barone's first pitch for a single. When the throw to first missed its mark, McGhee took second. He scored on Perham's single but Barone settled down and struck out two hitters and Madden, catching for the first time since Little League, caught Perham napping on third for the final out of the inning.
Perham held Bob's Auto in check in the second, despite giving up singles to Shawn Rumery and Matt Barone. Perham used only 12 pitches to retire the side in the third, his final inning on the mound. With one out in the bottom of third, Nick Dyer walked and scored on a pair of infield outs.
Keil Martin took over for the Worms and struck out two in the top of the fourth, but two walks, a single by Madden, and an infield error led to three runs. Trailing 6-2, the Worms struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Parker Moody was hit by a pitch, Normand Audie and Matt Grenier both singled. Josh Lindquist walked and the first four batters of the frame scored to tie the game. Martin settled in and held Bob's Auto scoreless the rest of the game.
When McGhee walked on four pitches from Benevides to start the bottom of the seventh, the TA Freshman pitching star took the game into his own hands, or perhaps, rather, his legs. The speedy McGhee scampered from first to third on Perham's single to center and Martin drove him in on a ball hit sharply to short. McGhee, running on contact hit the plate just ahead of Compson's throw to seal the opener for the Worms.
Anthony Barone had two hits for Bob's Auto and struck out five. Perham struck out four in three innings and Martin fanned three. McGhee scored two for the Worms.

In the first game in the Junior Division season, Prime Care took on defending division champs, Saco and Biddeford Savings on the JV field. Both teams have plenty of new blood and this was the first Senior Little League experience for many new players and coaches. Prime Care's manager, Jack Morrison, new to the league, but certainly not new to coaching, is calling the shots for Prime Care this season. He is joined on the bench by Bob Laskey and Charlie Marchese. Morrison, Thornton Academy's Freshman football coach, is also a past president of Maremont Little League in Saco. Saco and Biddeford Savings is headed by Tom Pike and assisted by Gary Gray, both returning from last season's championship team.
PrimeCare's Devin Hilton pitched five strong innings, yielding only one hit, striking out 2 and walking three in leading PrimeCare past last year's Division champs, Saco and Biddeford Savings.
Mitchell Turgeon led off the game with a single and was advanced by Brian Morrison who also singled. Turgeon scored on an error giving PrimeCare a short-lived lead. Saco and Biddeford Savings tied the game in the bottom of the second when Jason Dutremble led off with a single. He was sacrificed to second by Steven Wood. Dutremble then scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch by David Gray.
Saco and Biddeford Savings took the lead in the third when Wood singled to right to plate two runs. The final run of the frame was scored by Ryan Pike on an error.
PrimeCare tied the game in the third when Hilton singled, was sacrificed to second by Mike Collette, stole third and was driven home by Nick Laskey.
Saco and Biddeford Savings then pulled ahead in the bottom of the inning, with three runs, only to have the game tied again by PrimeCare when Brenton Roubo reached base on an error, advanced to second on an infield out and was driven in by Turgeon's double. Turgeon scored on an error.
Hilton pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. PrimeCare then scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth when Laskey walked, took second on Turgeon's third hit of the game and scored on a pair of errors. Relief pitcher Turgeon (six Ks) then held Saco and Biddeford Savings scoreless in the bottom of the frame for the win.
Brian Morrison and Zach Kern also had hits for PrimeCare.
Defensive jems were turned in by Brian Morrison on a sinking line drive to center, and Jeff Petit at second base.
David Gray pitched seven strong innings for Saco and Biddeford Savings, striking out seven. Cory Boissoneault also singled for the losing team.

In other league news; the 2001 Calendar fundraiser (click here to find a listing of winners to date) is underway.
The Calendar Fundraiser was implemented by the Board of Directors this past spring as a means of bringing more revenue into the league. The Saco Senior Little League provides more than 100 boys between the ages of 13 and 16 in Saco, Dayton and Arundel. The league's budget breaks down to more than $100 per player. Since the Saco Senior Little League doesn't have a home of its own—a concession stand, or an outfield fence on which to hang sponsors signs, both typical means of raising money for Little Leagues. The Calendar fundraiser is a mandatory fundraiser for all players in the league. Each player was assigned eight calendars to sell or buy themselves. Before uniforms were issued this season all calendars and money were due. This method assured the league that the fundraiser would be successful. All players and their parents were made aware of this fundraiser prior to registration.

Board decides
All-star policies
June 10, 2001
Saco Senior Little League Board meets
The Saco Senior Little League Board of Directors established policies and guidelines for this year's All-star teams at their monthly meeting held at the Saco Parks and Recrecreaiton Building, Sunday.
This year All-star teams in both the Junior and Senior Divisions will be limited to 13 players. The roster size is reduced by one from last season's teams. This move is due in part, to a change in Little League Tournament rules that mandate that all players on a roster and present for the game play in each game. Concerns were expressed by managers and coaches that it was difficult to assure that all players would be used in each game. Mention was also made of the fact that many other district and state tournament teams carried as few as 12 players on their rosters.
Teams will be established at the July 1 Board of Directors meeting at the Saco Parks and Recreation Building. Managers and coaches from teams in each division will review All-star ballots and then select teams which will begin practice for the District 4 Tournament.
Ballots will be distributed within the next few weeks. Players on each team will then make their picks for their respective division. Each voter will chose up to 13 players whom they believe will best represent the league in the District 4 tournament with an eye toward the state Little League tournament held at the end of July.
Another change in the selection policy this year is that players will be allowed to vote for their own teammates. In previous years players were prohibited from casting votes for kids on their own team. The board voted in favor of allowing a totally open ballot this season.
The top five vote-getters as selected by the players will be presented to the selection committee made up of managers and coaches. Each name will be reviewed individually. Each team will have one vote and if four of the five votes in the Junior Division or two of the three votes in the Senior Division are in favor of removing a player from the top five as selected by their peers, that player will be moved to the remaining player pool. In such an event, that player still has a chance to be later selected.
All managers and coaches (one vote per team) will then select the next five (or more, if a player is removed from the top five) players to the team while the final three picks are reserved for the All-star manager and his staff.
All-star managers and coaches will be determined by the end of the season and the privilege of managing will be determined by record. Managers of teams in first place by percentage points (in the event that all teams in a division haven't played an equal number of games) will have the first right of refusal. Since the time commitment to the All-star District 4 and possibly the State Tournament is heavy, some managers and coaches may not be able to participate. Likewise, all players should examine the amount of time needed to fulfill the commitment of participation on the All-star team. Parents and players alike must realize that practices and games can last through the month of July and act accordingly and responsibly.
This year's District tournament will be held beginning around July 10. The Junior Division State tournament is being held in Auburn, while the Senior Division tourney is in Bangor around the end of the month.
Make up games are now being scheduled.
Games postponed from the first weekend of play are now being rescheduled by field chief and scheduler, Mike Spaulding.
With the first four games postponed this year by weather and school baseball, the task of finding time to play those games is a daunting one. Not only does Spaulding have to worry about field space, he must also make sure that a tentatively rescheduled game does not give any team five games in one week. Pitching is one consideration. Many teams don't have enough quality pitchers to remain competitive for a week of four games. Another consideration is that many players are already scheduling work around their games and may have to miss a game or two to honor those prior commitments.
Rescheduled games are available on the Schedule Page of this this site.
Rain dampened the spirits of Wormwoods (vs. Ocean Communities) and Hillview Ice Cream and PrimeCare, on Monday, June 11. Those games will be rescheduled.
The Wormwoods vs. St. Louis game scheduled for Wednesday, June 13 at 7:30 has been postponed to a time after the lights can be installed at that field.
Calendar Sales report
The 2001 Saco Senior Little Leauge fundraiser, a June Calendar with hundreds of dollars in payouts has been very successful in bringing the league much needed operating expenses. Due to increased operating costs this year, including the hiring of Western Maine Board certified umpires in the Junior Division, it was extremely important and very neccessary to make this fundraiser work.
However, for several reasons that were unforseen by the SSLL Board of Directors, the sales may still fall short of expectations. A number of players on several teams have not participated to the fullest. It was expected that each player would bring in a minimum of $40, having sold or purchased themselves, eight calendars. Some players turned in fewer, and consequently, less money.
The disappointing part for many board members was that it was advertised heavily that the fundraiser was mandatory and each player was required to either sell or buy themselves, eight calendars and pay the $40 program fee before being issued a uniform.
