Retire the Rook?

Well, gang, here's the deal.  I've been playing the Rook as a character for just over five years, which is a pretty long time.  As his original metaplot comes to a resolution (you mean you haven't been watching?  Shame on you!), it's a logical question: is it time to retire the Rook?

It's a difficult question, at least for me.  On the one hand, I'm terribly fond of the character, and he's been through a lot.  On the other hand, he's been around for ages, he dominates my time and makes me neglect my other characters (or any potential new ones), and his metaplot story arc begun so long ago in WBS is coming to a close.  I'm having a hard time deciding whether to keep him around.  Is it better to draw the curtain at an appropriate moment, rather than to play him just because I can?  Or simply close out a chapter, and begin a new one?

So I'm asking you guys - the denizens of Toc's - to decide for me.  Send your vote via email to ejensen01@msn.com and let me know what you think - "retire" or "not retire" only, please, and one vote to a customer.  It's easy to say "Rook's cool, keep him around" (and I hope you'd think that), but it's really a larger, structural question about when it's time to go, not about whether he's a beloved character or not.  There's a timeline on this, as well - you've got one week from tonight (Monday) to cast your vote, and only emailed votes count.  Next Tuesday, the resolution, either way.

QUESTIONS

I haven't been following this storyline.  Should I still vote?

Yep - it's not about the character, really.  If you want to catch up to speed, check out the Rook's page, or click on the "Up" button at left.

Does "retirement" mean killing him off?

Not necessarily.  Most likely, based on the current storyline, he'd return to his Earth, and his proper time, with no ability to return to Fryja or other magical realms.

If he sticks around, will he still be the same character?

As we learned from 2AM Theatre tonight, no.  He would no longer have the patronage he now enjoys - fully mortal, no ability to sense magic, no way to "walk between worlds" like before.  His wounds, too, would remain.  If he "goes home", he would be made whole again, and regain his eye and lose the stigmata -- that might be a factor in how he decides, in the end.

What a creep!  You mean he'd just up and leave Briana?

I dunno.  You tell me.  When did I ever declare that the Rook was a "good guy"?

You're serious, then - you'll abide by the vote, no matter what?

Absolutely.  I'll probably post the percentages in my tag for awhile, as well, for the curious.

You know darn well we're all gonna vote to keep him.  This is just some ego-stroking exercise, isn't it?

Nope.  I trust my comrades at Toc's to vote based on the larger question of "when is it time to retire a character" rather than on any feelings for the character itself - although I'm sure those could factor in for some folk's votes, too.

Are you leaving Toc's?

Certainly not.  That's not even an option.

This might not be the place to ask this, but...is that really your hair in the pic?

*sighs*  Yes.
