Map Room Overview of Kaeran Geography & ClimateThe world called Kaer is a flat world, covered with salt water upon which sit several great continents and many smaller islands. The planet itself is stationary, orbited by twin suns in elliptical orbit. These small spheres are at opposite ends of their shared orbit, such that just as the first sun ducks under the horizon at the west end of the world, the second sun begins to rise on the eastern end. The sizes, distances, and speeds of said orbs are such that at any given point on the flat plane a "day" is still twenty-four hours long. In fact, only astrologers and astronomers commonly know of the second sun. Weather patterns remain relatively constant, but are not subject to the season and position of the twin suns, but rather to the actions of certain immortals who govern such things in the Realms Beyond. In most places, Kaerans perceive four seasons, as on Earth. Sages and priests offer little speculation on the gods' motives for cycles of seasons (or lack thereof). The climate of Kaer is inconstant; that is to say, there are not "zones" of tropical or temperate weather as we know them; certain areas maintain standard ranges of temperature, but this is not correlated to latitude and longitude. For example, on the continent of Saandim, the nations of Illustria, Salvora, and Laraeston could all be considered "temperate", while Samael enjoys "subtropical" weather. The concepts of "north" meaning cold and "south" meaning warm (or vice versa) are foreign to natives of Kaer - weather just is. There are several larger continents which are the hub of life on Kaer. The "main continent", at least by their own reckoning (and certainly that of the Old Karani) is Saandim, which floats near the very center of the flat world. To its southeast is the land called by some Gylkin, by others the Dawnlands. To the west of Saandim are the Imperial holdings of Naqua, and the land is also known by that name. Another continent, about the size of Naqua or Gylkin (each of which is significantly smaller than Saandim) lies further to the south of Saandim. Map DownloadsDownload Hex World Creator, a cool program that makes it easy to create and edit hexmaps for gaming. Hex World was created by the good folks at Balefire Software. Some of the maps that will be posted here will be in this format, because, as cool as Campaign Cartographer is, it ain't free, and everyone should be able to see these maps.
