Weed Control

Weed control is a very important part of the growth of the Christmas tree. Six different methods are used in the weed control of christmas trees. They are fire, biological control, mulch, cultivation, mowing and chemical controls. Fire is the least likely to be used when using weed control. It can be hard to control and spread extremely fast. It is usually used to get rid of extremely dense brush. biological control. Biological control is the use of livestock to eat and nock down weeds. Using livestock depends on a number of different factors including types of trees and the livestock that is being used. Mulch is a very useful form of weed control. The only problm would be the cost of the mulch. sawdust is the least expensive and most commonly used type of mulch. Cultivation is not used very often. This involves the pulling and tilling of the land that is being weeded. This is very labor intensive and is hard to do where the topography does not permit it. Mowing is by far the most common method of weed control. It is cost and time efficient. The only problem is being able to mow close to the tree without harming the shape of the tree. Riding mowers and walk behind mowers are most commonly used. Chemicals are also used in the control of weeds. This is the most effective method of weed control. It is also the easiest method used.

Trimming

Trimming is by far the most important aspect in the production of Christmas trees. Trimming is done once a year for each year that the tree grows. It is the most time consuming part of the process. Each tree must be trimmed to allow for new growth in the spring of the year. Each place that the tree is trimmed the branch will sprout into a number of new branches. Trimming is the way that a tree gets its shape. It varies to how much of the branch should be trimmed away. Approximetly 1-3 inches is usually sufficient. The terminal branch is a very important part to the tree. It is to be trimmed higher than all of the other branches on the tree. If two terminal tops are present, the one that is straightest and in the middle is the one that should be kept. The other should be removed at the node. trimmng of all other branches should be done at an angle of the tree. What is meant by this is that it must be angled to allow the branches to bud. The time of the year that most trimming is done is the spring and early summer months.
