Rice, Beans & Stuff -Evening Meal
(not just for rats!)

8 cups rice (any kind but my rats like brown basmati)
2 cups millet
1 cup mixture of pinto beans
garbanzo beans
soy beans
1 cup split peas
1 cup barley
1/2 cup lentils
1 cup wheat berries (soft or hard winter wheat or bulgar wheat)
1/4 cup flax seed
Also I add various chopped veggies like carrots, celery, brocolli, cauliflower, peas, green beans or whatever we have on hand.
Cooking directions: 1 part dry mixture to 2 parts water.

Boil water with a dash of salt.  Add dry mixture and reduce heat to a low simmer for 30-45 minutes (depends on how moist you like the mix.)  I like it moist but not too wet.
Throw in the chopped veggies during the last 15 minutes of cooking or throw them in raw just before serving.

These recipes make up several weeks of food to keep on hand (depending on how many rats you have.)

Stores

I shop for my ingredients at the Whole Foods Market and Health Food Stores from the bulk bins.
I buys most of my cereals from Trader Joes.  They sell natural brands of Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Total, and others that have less salt and no, low, or natural preservatives.  Plus Trader Joes has very good prices on their breakfast cereals.

Lab blocks can be purchased online from thestore along with other healthy products for your rats.
