RULES GOVERNING ANNUAL CONTESTS

The Annual Awards Committee will disqualify entries that fail to conform to these rules.

A. ELIGIBILITY OF CONTESTANTS

1. ACTIVE DUES-PAID MEMBERS, LIFE MEMBERS AND MEMBERS EXEMPT FROM DUES may enter all contests upon the payment of an entry fee of FIVE DOLLARS FOR EACH ENVELOPE ENTERED. Each poem entered in the Therese Lindsey Award will require an additional FIVE DOLLAR ENTRY FEE. Only one entrant's poems should be in an envelope. Make checks payable to the Poetry Society of Texas. ENTRY FEES MUST ACCOMPANY ENTRIES.

2. ASSOCIATE MEMBERS may enter only the contests marked with an asterisk (*) upon payment of an entry fee of FIVE DOLLARS FOR EACH ENVELOPE ENTERED. Each poem entered in the Therese Lindsey Award will require an additional FIVE DOLLAR ENTRY FEE. Only one entrant's poems should be in an envelope. Make checks payable to the Poetry Society of Texas. ENTRY FEES MUST ACCOMPANY ENTRIES.

3. NON-MEMBERS may enter contests marked with an asterisk (*). Up to 3 poems can be entered for a fee of five dollars. Poems entered in addition to the first 3 poems require a $2.00 entry fee per poem. Each poem entered in the Therese Lindsey Award will require an additional FIVE DOLLAR ENTRY FEE. Only one entrant's poems should be in an envelope. Make checks payable to the Poetry Society of Texas. Entry fees must accompany entries.

B. ELIGIBILITY OF POEMS

1. Entries must be received by the stated deadline.

2. Each entry must be the original work of the contestant.

3. Contestants may enter as many contests as desired, but only one poem in any one contest. (Except for Contest #1. See contest description.)

4. A poem entered in one contest may not be entered, in whole or in part, in any other contest.

5. A poem may not be entered in a contest in which the contestant won first place the preceding year.

6. A poem is not eligible which, in whole or in part, has been published in print, presented over radio or television or on the Internet, accepted for publication, or which is in the hands of an editor for consideration, or entered in any contest running concurrently.

7. Except for winners of the monthly Critic's Award, poems which have been entered in monthly or special contests and which are otherwise eligible, may be entered.

8. An eligible poem may not be withdrawn after submission.

9. Requests to alter poems after submission will not be honored. Before publication, an author may make only spelling, grammar, or punctuation changes to a winning poem.

10. The awards committee strongly recommends the use of Times New Roman as the font of submitted poems. This will reduce the chance of errors in published poems, since all first place poems must be scanned.

C. REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRIES

1. Submit typed poems, single or double-spaced, in duplicate, on 8-1/2" x 11" paper, one side only, with originals in one group and copies in another group.

2. If an entry has more than one page, the pages must be stapled together.

3. Type contest number and name of contest in upper left-hand corner of each entry; center title over poem.

4. Titles of one line will not be included in total line count. However, all extra lines, including subtitles, epigrams, and footnotes will be counted as part of the poem for line count.

5. No line in any poem may contain more than 60 characters, including spaces and punctuations.

6. List all poems along with contest numbers and contest names on an 8-1/2" x 11" identification sheet as follows:

The Freeda Murphy Prize, $25.00 - Offered by Peggy Zuleika Lynch of Austin in honor of Freeda Murphy for her consistent dedication to poets and the Poetry Society of Texas' Annual Awards and Treasury, for the best poem with a sharp image of a person drawn in words, in character as well. 92. The Ann Matthews Moorhead Prize, $25.00 - Offered by Budd Powell Mahan to honor the poetic skill and inspiration of Ann Matthews Moorhead. A Shakespearean sonnet on any subject. This contest is open only to members of PST who have never won more than 3 first places in the annual contests of PST.

93. The Imogene Ogle Prize, $25.00 - Offered by Budd Powell Mahan to honor the dedication of Imogene Ogle to poetry, poets, and PST. Prize will be given to a poem of 36 lines or fewer on the subject "Scent." Any form. This contest is open only to members of PST who have never won more than 3 first places in the annual contests of PST.

94.The Kay Merkel Boruff Prize, $25.00 - Offered by Budd Powell Mahan to recognize Kay Boruff for her many years of support for the Student Awards of PST. Prize will be given to a poem with an Asian influence having 24 lines or fewer in any form. This contest is open only to members of PST who have never won more than 3 first places in the annual contests of PST.

95. *The Martha Freeman France Award, $25.00 - Given in recognition of the incredible sustained membership of Martha Freeman France in PST. Any form, any subject. 30-line limit. Offered by Budd Mahan.
