Durga:  Warrior goddess

One of the incarnations of Mata Parvati is Durga Mata the ferocious warrior Goddess.  She is beautiful and serene and rides into battle seated on a lion. She has ten arms, each of which holds a weapon borrowed from the Gods and her sole desire is to destroy demons. In another incarnation she is known as Kali the red tongued black skinned warrior with four hands.

The giants Sumbha and Nisumba equipped with some powerful armies marched against the demigods. In terror they approached Lord Shiva who refused to help since the giants are his devotees but he suggested that they approach Parvati. She promised to help them by appearing as Durga. An army of giants fought her which she quickly vanquished. Sumbha and Nisumbha now marched with a second army led by Raktavij whom Durga attacked fiercely but a thousand giants as strong as he sprang up from each drop of his blood which touched the earth. Durga near defeat desperately split herself in two. Part of her became Kali who drank the drops of blood before they touched the earth. Soon Raktavij was dead and the rest of the army including Sumbha and Nisumbha were defeated.   Jai Durga Mata Ki JAI
